Full description
As anyone who’s ever seen a jazz funeral knows, people in New Orleans understand that death should be a celebration of life. That’s part of the reason no other city in the United States is renowned for it’s cemeteries the way they are in New Orleans. This tour provides you with the opportunity to stop in for a visit to New Orleans’ oldest above-ground cemetery.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 was founded in 1789. Due to unique environmental circumstance and centuries-old Catholic tradition, standard below ground burials could no longer take place and the people of New Orleans had to devise some creative solutions. This led to the first St. Louis cemetery being born.

It is an 8-block area in what used to be the uninhabitable outskirts of town, home to the tombs of plantation owners, architects, pirates, a chess champion, a voodoo queen, and Nicolas Cage. This tour provides a full hour exploring the cemetery with a licensed local guide. Access to the cemetery is restricted to guided tours and space is limited, making a guided tour one of your only options to experience the grounds.
