Full description

Explore jazz in New Orleans’ Armstrong Park on this guided walking tour. Learn how European descendants and people from West Africa and the Caribbean gave birth to this genre. Hear about one of the world's most famous jazz musicians, Louis Armstrong, whom the park is named after.

Start underneath the park’s famed lighted arched entrance, exploring the area originally known as Congo Square – one of the first locations in the city where enslaved people and free people of color were allowed to gather and socialize.

Hear about jazz’s origins, resulting from a rich mix of cultures in a single city, which combined West African and Caribbean sounds with European musical influences – giving us this uniquely American art form.

Listen to the story of Louis Armstrong, one of New Orleans’ most beloved sons, whose career spanned 5 decades in the history of jazz and greatly influenced the genre.

As you follow your guide through the park, there’s always a chance of hearing some live jazz from one of New Orleans’ street performers or local musical groups, so keep your fingers crossed.

End this tour in the French Quarter with a new appreciation for American music, New Orleans’ famous residents, and the art and sounds of jazz.
