Take a fascinating walk around New Orleans’s most famous cemetery and discover the truth about Voodoo.
What to Expect
In this 2-hour walking tour we will visit the Saint Louis Cemetery. It is the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans, opened in 1789, and has only above-ground vaults.

Along the way you will learn about Voodoo rituals, and the history of Voodoo.

The St Louis cemetery is often called the city of the dead, because of the rows of above-ground tombs that line the cemetery, resembling city streets rather than a cemetery.

Early settlers in the area quickly realized that it was impossible to bury people as per custom in New Orleans because of the high water-table. When they dug a few feet down, the graves started to fill with water. So above-ground vaults that look like small houses were used.

The most famous tomb in the cemetery is that of the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. Laveau had a strong following from 1830 until her death in 1881 and she is no less popular today; her tomb receives more visitors than that of Elvis Presley.

We will take a closer look at the misunderstood practice of Voodoo, investigating its West African origins and its Catholic influences and history.

Do not miss this unforgettable tour into an unseen side of New Orleans.
