Full description
Sanjay Colony is a relatively small slum built on 25 acres of land located near the famous Bahá'í Lotus Temple and ISKCON Hare Krishna Temple. Originally built on forest land, this slum is surrounded by one of India's largest industrial areas and is home to approximately 50,000 people. Join an educational walking tour that aims to encourage conversation around the realities of living in slums. Come with an open mind and be prepared to debunk negative stereotypes surrounding slums. Observe the process of garment recycling and manufacture, one of the main industries in Sanjay Colony. It is also home to several other businesses, including automotive parts and electronics. Understand the complex social structure that exists within this community, and stop to wave at friendly children from the neighborhood. You will also have a chance to visit a Hindu temple and a mosque. Additionally, visit a doctor's clinic and learn about the health issues that are present in a slum environment and the different initiatives started to try and combat these. Navigate through the narrow alleys and climb a rooftop for an unparalleled view of the surrounding area. For a truly authentic experience, choose to have lunch with a local family. Enjoy a simple, home-cooked vegetarian meal lovingly prepared by your friendly hosts. Proceeds from this tour are re-invested into community development projects such as education, skills development and healthcare for the residents of Sanjay Colony.

Probably the best thing I did while staying in Delhi. The tour is very informative and eyeopening. You get to see a side of Delhi you normally wouldn’t see as a tourist and visit people in their daily lives. I chose the opinion with lunch, which was in a family home and absolutely delicious. The people were really friendly and also the children on the street didn’t miss a chance to talk to me. The guide was very knowledgable and spoke good english. If you’re in Delhi don’t miss this tour. Part of the money going to the slums you’re visiting is also just awesome!

Very good tour, chance to see real life in slums: how they work, live. Really recommended! The money from the tour go to a non-commercial organization which educates people from this slum. For such a small amount of money so much impressions and you help the community at the same time! The tour is safe, didn’t feel any danger. It’s dirty there of course so just be attentive, no real threat from people.

This trip was absolutely amazing. Vijay gave me the best possible insight to the Sanjay Colony Slums. It was such an eye opening experience and makes you feel so grateful for your own life quality. I would recommend this trip to anyone and everyone it is life changing. The people are so warm hearted and welcoming. Children are so happy and friendly, you can tell they do not want to miss the opportunity to practice their English when you are passing by. Such good value for money and you get to see in real life where your money goes as 80% of the profit is invested back into the community with the Reality Gives programme. I will be returning to do this tour again before I return home to the UK with the rest of the group I am travelling with.
