Day 1: Delhi – Agra
Start off with breakfast at your hotel before the 4-hour drive to Agra by private vehicle. You’ll pass India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhawan as you leave Delhi.
The first stop on your afternoon sightseeing tour will be the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New7Wonders of the World. Your guide will tell you about its principal Persian designer and about Mughal architecture, which was a style borrowed from many traditions, including Islamic, Turkish, and Indian.
After lunch, your driver will take you to the 16th-century Agra Fort, built on the banks of the Yamuna River by Emperor Akbar. Admire its construction from red sandstone and its intricate design that combines both Islamic and Hindu architectural styles.
Explore the complex to see the beautifully constructed rooms such as the Diwan-i-Am, or public audience hall, and the Diwan-i-Khas, the private audience hall, added by Shah Jahan.
Your city tour ends with a visit to the Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, a site more commonly known as the Baby Taj. Hear about the strong Persian influence on the monument’s design, which was the first tomb in India to be made entirely from marble. Overnight in Agra.
Day 2: Agra – Jaipur
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before heading out on the 5-hour drive to Jaipur. En route, you’ll stop to visit the UNESCO World Heritage red sandstone complex of Fatehpur Sikri. Take a walk inside the walls of the complex as your guide tells you about the Hindu and Muslim architectural style of the sprawling construction, which includes the Jama Masjid, the Tomb of Salim Chishti Chisti, the Panch Mahal and other buildings.
Next, you’ll continue on to Jaipur and check in at your hotel. With your evening free to spend at leisure, you might like to explore the local market. Overnight in Jaipur.
Day 03: Jaipur – Delhi
Your day in Jaipur begins after breakfast with a guided tour of the Amber Fort. It’s easy to feel like a maharaja from the past as you approach the Fort on the back of an elephant that’s outfitted with traditional Indian garb.
Take a walk around the hilltop palace, constructed at the end of 16th century, and learn about this excellent example of Rajput architecture. Admire the palace’s ornate design and the breathtaking views of Maota Lake from the fortress.
After lunch, your guide will take you on a city tour of Jaipur, a city whose origins can be traced back to the 18th century, during the reign of Jai Singh II. Look beyond the bustling metropolis to find its historical charm, including magnificent palaces, temples, lush gardens, and pink plastered stone that has given Jaipur its popular name of the Pink City.
See the top sights of Jaipur, starting with the City Palace and its fine collection of textiles, costumes, and armor. Admire the exquisite Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, built to resemble the crown of the Hindu god, Krishna.
