We travelled down by train despite intentions to go on a coach. Our guide, Sarah, was totally unflappable and dealt with the whole situation calmly and with good humour. Her knowledge and presentation in her story telling was excellent. She also paced the ascent up the "hill" brilliantly, conveniently stopping numerous times for us to rest, catch our breath and listen to stories of King Ludvig II. The only negative we can state is time at the castle was too short and the tour at only 35mins (not determined by this company but by the castle itself felt rushed). If we could have had an hour or so longer we could have walked round to view the castle from near the bridge (currently closed for maintenance) and maybe ventured up to the upper courtyard. Some people on our tour managed the former but my husband is registered blind so we couldn't race around. It would have also been nice to go back to the lake for a little time. Overall a great introduction to the castle. We will return!!!
My boyfriend and I were planning on making our own way out to the castle but ended up having to book this tour the night before as we didn’t know you can only purchase your own tickets into the castle two days before at latest. Had we been more organized I would have preferred to make our own way out there and manage our own time. You can only enter the castle with their tour guides and you get the same information as you would by the getyourguide tour. I felt we spent a lot of time waiting around and definitely could have done this in a half day instead of 10+ hours. Plus you have to pay the extra 13.5 euro for the castle tickets anyways. Also make sure to bring cash, a lot of the places don’t accept cards or the is a hefty minimum amount to do so.
We bought the tickets online and were a little skeptic on how things would turn out, since we had no earlier experience with GetYourGuide... But everything worked like a glockenspiel. Tecnically the trip went like this: we had a private bus taking us down to Neuschwanstein, where we spent an interesting day and got into the castle without having to queue the tickets. Then we were taken back to Munich with the same bus. We met our guide Ali (a reallly nice Italian girl who spoke english like a natural) at HauptBahnhof and she took very good care of us. Her knowledge on Bavarian history was great and the way she presented it was enthusiastic, entertaining and compelling. Highly recommend!
A lot of people showed up in the morning and at first I was not sure this was going to go well. But once the guides took over their respective groups, everything went well. Our American guide (Sara) gave us a lot of background information on the way which made the experience richer and she also took good care that nobody would get lost on the way - some people tended to wander off more than others.
We had Sarah as our guide. She has great knowledge of Ludwig and his kingdom. She told “The Story” from childhood to cover every aspect of his life, and delivered in increments that made the journey to The castle seem effortless. Conscious of her team and time constraints, she made the tour a joy. I hate tours, though if I was guaranteed of a Sarah every time, I’d book one.
