From Lisbon: Óbidos and Nazaré Day Trip with Ginjinha …

Discover the history of the fishing village of Nazare and the medieval village of Óbidos on a full-day tour from Lisbon. Stop for lunch in Nazare and taste fresh fish and seafood. Visit the Sanctuary and the "Ermida da Memória" where a miracle occurred to a knight Templar. With luck, you will still be able to witness where the biggest waves in the world occur, which can reach over 30 meters in height, from the Fort of St. Michael the Archangel, it was built in 1577 to defend the bay and cove from attacks by Algerian, Moroccan, Dutch and Norman pirates who raided the Atlantic coast. Then continue to the medieval village of Óbidos, where you will visit the Óbidos castle and taste a typical drink from the region, the famous “Ginjinha”, served in a chocolate cup. A trip to Óbidos necessarily requires a visit to the town surrounding the castle, the capital of "ginjinha", a cherry liqueur, a popular drink that is a highlight of tourists visitors to Lisbon and its surroundings, but which finds its true home in Óbidos, enjoyed in a chocolate cup, it is an inseparable part of this visit. The history surrounding this defensive structure is long, and it fell into Portuguese hands in the 12th century as part of the Reconquista, by D. Afonso I "The Conqueror", a nobleman who proclaimed himself King and was accepted by the nobles and people when he conquered their Kingdom from the moors on the Iberian Peninsula, today Portugal. Óbidos Castle is one of the most romantic places in the country, and has been synonymous with affection and offerings between kings and queens since 1210, the year in which the King of Portugal offered the town and the Castle as a wedding gift to his Queen consort. In 1282, it was a time of great national development and the creation of the "Escolas Gerais", today the University of Coimbra, where D. Dinis and Queen Saint Isabel spent their honeymoon. This is how Óbidos Castle became part of the ""Casa das Rainhas, the name given to the set of assets given to queens when they married the king. Óbidos Castle suffered severe structural damage in the 18th century as a result of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and its reconstruction proved to be a difficult project. However, several changes followed over the years and, in the 20th century, during the Republic in 1932, the consolidation, reconstruction and restoration work was carried out, and it was later converted into a hotel at the Pousada do Castelo.

Our tour was very exciting. It's not every day that you get to go see the beach. The wind and the water and the beautiful view points kept our spirits high. May 26 is outside of the big waves season, so our best option was to see the video of the BIG waves. The ocean for us was a little stormy, nothing out of the ordinary, there were some surfers too. And still it was exciting to watch them. If you expect to see the BIG waves, go from November to March, and maybe you will be lucky, since the waves depend on specific conditions in the nature, so there is no guarantees you'll see them. Our tour guide (sorry, his name escapes me at the moment) is a surfer, so he told us interesting stories and gave good info about the big waves event. After Nazare we went to Obidos - a unique medieval town with narrow streets, interesting stores, ancient fortress wall that you can climb, street musicians... Just a beautiful vibe that brought us a great pleasure. The tour guide was very friendly. Thanks!!

Absolutely fantastic day trip with Felipe. Great guide. Really appreciated how he set the stage at the start for it to be a pleasant day. He provided extensive information about each location and was enthusiastic throughout. Great local experiences we wouldn’t have known about w/o a local’s information. He was also very patient when someone from our group wandered off towards the end. One suggestion: a sit down lunch in Nazare took up the entire time in the lower part of town on the beach. I would suggest offering people the choice of a nice sit down lunch OR grabbing a quick bite and exploring the town/beach more. On our tour there wasn’t time for both

Our guide was perfect :) I couldn't have imagined a better or friendlier tour guide. He even responded to individual requests, saying, "Okay, if you want to see that, I'll take the time." There were four of us on the tour, so it was very private, and the guide made sure that our tour was as personal as possible. We had at least an hour of private time at each of the sights. I highly recommend this trip —> 10/10. Thank you very much for this great time :)
