Naples is a historical city with complex roots that run so deep, we have no choice but to show you what's beneath its surface. This underground walk, with trained guide, will show you places and spaces you never knew existed.
What to Expect
Underneath the chaotic alleys of the historic center of Naples lies a curious maze of tunnels, imperial structures, and cisterns. This 2-hour underground walk begins with a stroll through the lively streets of the city center which still follow the ancient decumani: the main Roman roads. These thoroughfares illustrate the vivid sights, sounds and smells of Neapolitan street life, while also illustrating the imprint of ancient civilizations on this intense modern-day city.
Located right off the via Tribunali, the decumanus major (the excavations underneath the Gothic church of San Lorenzo Maggiore) are one of the key places to view remains of the ancient city, taking us to the Roman forum and center of political, commercial and religious activity.
From here, we will descend into an amazing series of ancient streets that date from the 1st and 3rd century B.C. , where various building typologies line the streets. Keep an eye out for the aerarium, where the city's riches were held, as well as the bakery, laundry and the suggestive cryptoporticus.
If you already think Naples is fascinating, wait until you see what's underground! Our walking “seminar” will enrich and enlighten you to a place where the present is constantly creating history.
