Head to a world 40 meters below the busy streets of Naples’ historic center. Isolated in time and unexplored until recently, this underground space is deeply connected with the world above. See a Greek Roman aqueduct, WWII air raid shelters and more.
What to Expect
Traveling back in time, you'll descend 40 meters below street level and emerge into the honeycombed underground of Naples and its haunting and mysterious history. On this 90-minute tour you'll see a few of the cavities excavated in the 4th century, and used as cisterns for the water supply of the city for nearly 23 centuries.
The environment is spacious and illuminated, except for a short segment where there is an optional visit (each person is given a candle to light their own path). The walking surface is smooth and straight.
See the air raid shelters from World War II, the War Museum, and the Hypogeum Gardens, as well as the Greek Roman aqueduct.
You'll also visit the remains of the ancient Roman Theater of Neapolis, entering from the ground floor of a typical Neapolitan house. Emperor Nero kept a private dressing room here for the times he performed his shows in Naples.
