Full description
Travel back in time and explore the Catacombs of San Gennaro to learn more about the patron saint of Naples. Discover what lies beneath street level as you see stunning frescoes and Byzantine paintings from the 9th to the 10th century AD. Explore the history of the paleo-Christian burial site with an English or Italian-speaking guide. Get explanations about the 4th-century expansion following the transfer of the remains of St. Agrippinus to the underground basilica dedicated to him. See the large baptismal font commissioned by Bishop Paul II, who took refuge in the catacombs in the 8th century during iconoclastic struggles. Get a closer look at the details of the upper catacomb, decorated at the beginning of the 3rd century in the so-called Pompeian style, and now home to some of the earliest Christian paintings in southern Italy. Be amazed by the precious Crypt of the Bishops and its 5th-century mosaics, including one depicting the Bishop of Carthage, St. Quodvultdeus.

Great history lesson! Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered everyone’s questions. The only downside was that another tour came in shortly after we started and because we were only 1 section away from them, it was hard to hear our guide over their guide. A great afternoon break from the baking sun ☀️!

Fantastic. Great to see such history perserved in a such a way. Not religious in anyway but was amazing to see, and to hear the history. The guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable, spoke perfect English and engaged when asked questions of the subject. Would recommend to anyone travelling to Napoli.

The catacombs were a great value and incredibly interesting way to spend the afternoon in Naples, fascinating history and a great guide. Optional afterwards is a look around the cemetery that holds 50000 skulls and bones from the bodies of the catacombs, free to enter and only a 15 minute walk from catacombs. In my opinion it’s a must see!
