Naissaar: Soviet Military & Coastal Folk Heritage Day Trip

1. Naissaar: Soviet Military & Coastal Folk Heritage Day Trip

Naissaar Island was a popular outing destination prior to World War 2, and home to the Aibofolk (Swedish heritage islanders) who made their fortunes as pilots and seal hunters and enjoyed lucrative business with privateers. The Soviet army then turned the island into a secluded military base. Explore the sights from the Soviet military period and remnants of pre-war life. Depart for a 1-hour boat voyage from the historic Lennusadam, enjoying beautiful views while passing Katherina Keys, Bald Island, and Midshallows Lighthouse. You’ll have an amazing opportunity to visit an abandoned sea mine stockyard that was once a top-secret Soviet military base. The secrecy of the base was of utmost importance and is surrounded by double-wire fences guarded by bloodhounds. Afterwards, see the Fire Boulder, another of the island’s landmarks with a thrilling tale to tell. As a final stop, get a true contrast to the military history with a visit to a sanctuary for the native people of the island and learn about the exciting past of its former inhabitants. At the end of the tour, take some time to wander on the beach.

The visit to the island is quite good, it is worth going and paying to go up to the lighthouse and down to the tunnels and underground batteries. In addition, today there is nothing crowded with tourists, which makes it a somewhat unique experience. However, these guided tours are only in English or Russian, and let's say that they are very chaotic in English, so if you don't master it well, you miss the visit completely. Another thing to improve is that they could explain a little how the day will go, because they hardly tell you anything and you discover "on the way". As far as the food they offer is not bad, but it is not a big deal either. If there is an option without lunch, better bring it.

Absolutely fascinating

The old fortress guntower underground turning mechanism is truly amazing to see, as well the majestic buildings themselves captured in time and overgrown by forest. Really should spend more time there. Lighthouse observation deck provides marvellous views, quite exhausting 207 steps though. Ride with old military vehicle is fun.

The island was really nice and it was a great hike with the audio guide. The sea mines were especially interesting to see. The only negative is that it was quite unclear what was actually included in the tour that we booked, and the other reviews have conflicting info as well.

Great day out. A little bit more informative on how the day’s supposed to go and what’s next would of been appreciated but aside from that a great day.

Great tour into the past. We really enjoyed the truck ride and the lunch was really nice
