  • Hike through a beautiful forest trail filled with ponds and mountain views
  • Have an authentic local soba lunch
  • Walk through a path of Togakushi Shrine's towering cedar trees
  • Delve into the world of ninja
Togakushi in Nagano prefecture is famous for its soba, hiking, the Togakushi Shrines and ninja! Enjoy hiking in Japan's backyard, a traditional lunch and a ninja experience not quickly forgotten. Learn about Japan's nature and ninja on this guided tour!
What to Expect
The tour starts with a hike through a beautiful forest area with several ponds including the Kagami-ike pond. Kagami is translated to mirror in Japanese. On days when there is no wind blowing, it is possible to see Mount Togakusfhi's impressive reflection on the lake. But even without the reflection is the lake a sight to be seen. The hiking path also passes by a spot that sports a beautiful view of the Japanese Alps on a clear day and a valley below.
Hiking for a while can get you hungry, so after the hike it is time for some authentic Japanese lunch: Soba, or buckwheat noodles in English. It is the staple dish of Nagano prefecture and especially Togakushi is famous for its soba. It often comes with delicious shrimp and seasonal vegetable tempura.
After lunch we take the bus over to the Okusha Shrine, one of the Togakushi Shrines. Here we will set out on an empowering walk through a path of towering Japanese cedar trees while learning about the native religion of Shinto.
After having absorbed nature in abundance, it is time for some recreation and learning at the Ninja Folklore Museum. Here you can not only learn about the history of the Togakushi ninja at the museum, but also try to find your way out of a maze in the ninja house filled with hidden doors, throw ninja stars (shuriken), and more!
