Full description

Meet your guide at one of the 5 meetup points of your choice. Board the tour bus and head straight to the mountains of Shiga Kogen, Japan and Asia's largest and highest ski resort. Upon arrival, spend 1.5 hours playing in the snow. Whizz down the mountain on a snowscoot, snowdrive, sled, or tube. Once you have worked up an appetite, stop for lunch at a restaurant adjoining the ski slopes. Choose from a menu offering a variety of Japanese or Western style dishes. Next, board the tour vehicle for the short journey out of the mountains and onto the Snow Monkey Park. Upon arrival, you will walk along the tranquil 1.6km trail leading to the park itself. As the only troop of monkeys in the world known to bathe in hot springs, the monkeys have achieved global fame and observing them living their best life at such short proximity is a real treat. After walking back along the trail, treat yourself to a fun souvenir at the gift shop or an apple pie at the nearby cafe (time permitting). Finally, return to your chosen drop off point after a snow-filled adventure that promises to leave a lasting impression.

Know before you go

  • There will be a substantial amount of walking involved (1.6km walk to and from the park).
  • The temperature in the Shiga Highlands in the winter is cold and can be minus 5 – 10 degrees. Dress in warm, waterproof clothing and boots for snow activities. Snow outfits (snow jackets, pants, gloves, snow boots) are available to rent for ¥500 each. Small sizes are available as well.)
  • Infants (0-5) are free of charge. (No tour meal is included. Please order foods directly from the restaurant.)
  • This tour does not include skiing or snowboarding, nor is there the time to arrange your own skiing and snowboarding while at the resort.
  • There are a few days in the year that the monkeys might not come down to the park or that the monkeys leave the park early. While this is unlikely to happen, it is possible and is outside of our control.

I appreciated that the email correspondences were prompt and the agency allowed us to change the pick-up venue and even made allowances for us to meet slightly late due to the local train schedule. We had a good guide who took care of the group. The path towards the snow monkeys site was slippery and he let me hold onto to him for better support against slipping. The kids had fun in the snow. It was a pity that the snow wasn't deep enough for us to use the conveyor belt to ride to the upper slope. We had to drag the sledge uphill in order to slide down. It was early winter then.

Very nice hospitable guide by the name of Marie. Detailed & patient in her explanation. Excellent smooth drive by the gentleman driving the mini bus. 1st stop was the nice 1hr+ drive to Shiga Kogen for snow activities. They have a locked room at the resort where you can keep your stuff, this room also has a full range of winter apparels in all sizes, water proof tops & bottoms, boots, gloves, goggles. The area for snow activity was a short walk outside the building, well equip to keep you occupied for 2hrs. Good quality food, given a coupon to exchange,, quite a good selection, we had the pork katsu curry, soft drinks were free flow. You can also purchase additional items via coupon dispensing machine. After lunch the drive was to see the snow monkeys, The walk is 3.2km for the round trip. Beautiful walk, just beware of the steps at the start of the walk, super slippery on an icy day. Especially at the top of the steps, nothing to hold, watch your steps. Excellent trip!!
