MoMA Visitor Tips and Advice

Definitely one of New York's most impressive museums, MoMA is itself architecturally as striking as the artworks housed within. For some help with how to make the most of your time, here are some tips and advice.

When to go

MoMA is open daily from 10:30AM to 5:30PM (except on Christmas and Thanksgiving) and open until 8:00PM for UNIQLO Free Fridays, which tend to be busy.

Maps and tours

With 6 floors of exhibits, it's worth looking at a museum map online before you visit. There are also tours and free talks daily between 11:30AM and 1:30PM.

Work your way down

The painting and sculpture galleries are on the 4th and 5th floors and can be a great point to start exploring if you can't make up your mind where to begin.

Audio tours

Included in the price of admission, these interesting audio tours can give you far greater insight into the exhibits. Just remember, you need to leave ID to take a tour!

Food and drink

MoMA also houses multiple bars and restaurants. Why not take a break from the galleries and enjoy some of the wonderful cuisine on offer?

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA): Our Tips

Avoiding the queues

MoMA displays iconic works by artists like Henri Matisse, and is such an important architectural structure itself, so it's very popular for tourists and you may have to queue to enter the galleries. But don't worry; even on UNIQLO Free Fridays (from 4:00PM to 8:00PM) the line tends to move quickly. If you're worried, you can purchase a skip the line ticket in advance.

Check your bags

The price of checking your coat and bags is included in the admission price, and is definitely recommended before you set off around the museum. But be aware that even in warm weather, sometimes the galleries can be a little cold, so bring a sweater!

MoMA Shop

Gift shops may not be high on your list of priorities (or budget) but the MoMA shop really is exceptional and worth taking a look at on your way out of the museum.

Fantastic museum, not exactly what I wanted to see

I was hoping for a full scale Abstract Expressionism, 'got' just 1 De Kooning and 2 Rothkos - and a room full of (ugly by me) Picassos. I think it was just luck of the draw - a friend of mine, at different time, saw a room full of De Koonings.... Still, one of the best expositions I've ever seen - recommended always!

A great holiday in New York with the easy to use New York City Pass

I bought our pass on-line about a fortnight before we left for New York with my 18 year old daughter. I got an e-mail in reply giving instructions on how to exchange the voucher for the pass when we got to New York. We exchanged ours at Ripleys but which you can do at several attractions in the city. We then had the choice of five out of the sixty odd attractions offered. We chose the Radio City Music Hall, Empire State building, Top of the Rock, The American Museum of Natural History and Ripley's Believe it or not. All were excellent and there were many others we would have liked to have done. New York is quite expensive and to have paid separately for entry would have cost far more than we paid for the pass. Well worth doing.

The best thing you can get yourself in New York!

Easy to book, easy to pickup. The only pass that offers a range of guided walking tours which are included in the pass price! We took the Rockefeller, Radio Music Hall, Greenwich Village, Highline & Meatpacking, Brooklyn Bridge & DUMBO, Inside Broadway & Soho-Chinatown-LiLItaly tours and were super amazed with the quality of the guides and the tours! In addition we visited 5 museums (including The MEt & MoMA), rented bicycle for central park and visited Top of the Rock, Empire State & Status of Liberty. It´s so worth it, and you never need to stay in line to buy tickets. Just get your city pass and plan your vacation right. Cons - not including a metro pass. Everything else was just awesome.
