In the 19th century, the building changed function completely when the Austrians, stationed in Krakow, established a prison here. Paradoxically, it inherited the monastery’s name and became known as St. Michael’s Prison. After WWII, it was closed, and the Archaeological Museum was established. Its most famous attraction is the Światowid statue, a 9th–10th century four-faced pagan god, discovered in 1848 in Zbrucz. The museum has two branches: St. Wojciech’s Church on Krakow’s Main Square, where an underground exhibition presents the history of the square, the church, and its patron, Saint Wojciech. Visitors can see remnants of wooden and stone floors, as well as Romanesque walls. Nowa Huta-Branice, closely linked with the Nowa Huta district and metallurgical plant. Archaeological discoveries began in 1949 during early construction works.
