Full description

In the not-so-distant past, Munich bore the official title, “Hauptstadt der Bewegung” - Capital of the Nazi Movement. This was the city that the Allied Supreme Commander General Eisenhower called “the cradle of the Nazi beast.” Unknown to the casual tourist, many of Munich's buildings carry the mysteries of a dark past, and this 2.5-hour walking tour will uncover those secrets. You will learn how Munich became the birthplace of the Nazi Party and the stage upon which some of the Nazis' most notorious crimes were launched, from Hitler's failed putsch to the horrific Kristallnacht - the largest anti-Semitic pogrom seen in western Europe for centuries, and a dismal milestone on the road to the Holocaust. You will visit the beer-halls that hosted the first small gatherings of the fanatics who one day would lead the Third Reich, and the places where Hitler made his first major speeches. Walk through the streets where Hitler and his Brownshirts fought their way to power, and learn just how they did it. You will go to the official Nazi Headquarters from where Hitler bullied the world, and see buildings that bear the scars of the Second World War. The irony is that while much of central Munich was devastated by Allied bombing, many Nazi buildings survived and still stand today. And standing alongside them are memorials to the city's many victims of Nazism, including those who sacrificed their lives in opposing its hateful ideology.

Nicola made this tour so incredible! As a true historian, her depth of knowledge about Munich and the Third Reich really helped to make the subject matter digestible and fascinating. She built the timetable of historical events in an easy to follow manner and inserted little known facts which made for an interesting presentation of this time in history. It was more than just a walking tour as she led you past and into buildings and courtyards of significance while weaving her story of the rise of the Third Reich. Wonderful, engaging, and important!

Excellent and informative tour!

Eric was a very well informed and engaging tour guide even though obviously the subject matter is challenging. The walk was quite easy and the sites were very interesting. Not only did one get to see a lot of central Munich, one was also learning an additional level of history. He answered questions very well and it was an informative history tour, rather than a goofy or kitschy tour. Eric was friendly and tried to personalize some of the discussion to the people in our group. I highly recommend it -- it was well worth the money and I would take other tours with the company or with Eric.

History lesson comes to life

Our guide Aileen led our group of 20 (est) on this 3 hour tour. She spoke clearly and was easy to follow. It was interesting to see where so much Nazi history began and I was especially taken with the eternal flame memorial for all the victims of that time of horror. Her photos added clarity to her presentation. My only suggestion is to start the tour at the Marienplatz. Nothing happened at the Bahnhof and we had to spend time riding the train. That was a waste of time.
