Full description

After meeting your guide in Marienplatz, take an S-bahn train to Dachau Bahnhof and then a short bus ride to the memorial site.

On the way, learn about the rise of the Nazi Party throughout the 1920s up to Adolf Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor in 1933. Hear about the introduction of concentration camps and the role Dachau played as a model for other camps. Start a guided tour of all the areas and buildings open to the public. Visit the SS training facility, the bathhouse, and the main gate with the infamous ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ slogan. See the perimeter fence, several religious memorials, and the bunker, which acted as a prison within the camp. Your guide will explain the methods of torture and punishments used in the camp, and the various medical experiments carried out on prisoners. Hear what daily life was like for prisoners and their guards. Learn about Georg Elser, the man who almost killed Hitler and was executed at Dachau. Visit the former gas chamber and crematorium. Watch a short color film of Dachau in the hours following its liberation, and hear about what happened afterwards.

You will then walk back to the visitor center and start the return journey back to Munich.

Our guide Keith was very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject! He was very organized and made sure we had extra time at the end to explore on our own! There were 18 people in our group, while the other groups there had >30 people in each group. Could have easily spent the whole day walking through the museum there, so much to see!

Overall the tour guide was great, very well educated. I think it was nice to have an in person guide rather than the audio guide at the facility. He went beyond just the facts and would talk about how it’s important we learn about it and how he feels as a German. He understood more than just knowing it. Only thing is I thought the transportation would be a bus or something but the guide just came with us on the subway.

The tour was very interesting and informative. Mat was very knowledgeable and well-prepared. The transportation was well coordinated. I highly recommend this tour (hopefully with Mat)!! In a different note, a friend of mine that was also taking the tour lost his phone on the train, and Mat kindly helped us to communicate with the person that found the phone. Mat, if you see this, thank you so much! We found the phone! Also, blessings to the person who found it and kept it until we got there!
