Full description

After meeting your guide in Marienplatz, take an S-bahn train to Dachau Bahnhof and then a short bus ride to the memorial site.

On the way, learn about the rise of the Nazi Party throughout the 1920s up to Adolf Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor in 1933. Hear about the introduction of concentration camps and the role Dachau played as a model for other camps. Start a guided tour of all the areas and buildings open to the public. Visit the SS training facility, the bathhouse, and the main gate with the infamous ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ slogan. See the perimeter fence, several religious memorials, and the bunker, which acted as a prison within the camp. Your guide will explain the methods of torture and punishments used in the camp, and the various medical experiments carried out on prisoners. Hear what daily life was like for prisoners and their guards. Learn about Georg Elser, the man who almost killed Hitler and was executed at Dachau. Visit the former gas chamber and crematorium. Watch a short color film of Dachau in the hours following its liberation, and hear about what happened afterwards.

You will then walk back to the visitor center and start the return journey back to Munich.

Great experience with a ton of interesting information. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable. The only downfall was that there wasn’t much time to explore or read/look at the museum photos and artifacts. There was just so much information packed into 3 short hours. I wouldn’t want to trim any of the tour guide information, so more time would be ideal.

The visit was well worth and the guide Keith was very knowledgeable. It was unfortunate that the time spent on the site was restricted by the train schedule and our schedule became very tight due to the delay in train service. There were quite a lot to see in the memorial site and it was quite a rush in the end and somehow I felt we might have missed something. Yet I do appreciate the effort Keith put in to ensure he covered as much as possible within the limited time.

It was very interesting and seemed to go smoothly. We felt there was way too much narrative from the guide (which was hard to hear and understand due to echo in buildings) we would rather have had time to read and see some of the exhibits inside. We felt rushed a bit thru different buildings and areas.
