What people are saying about Mumbai
Good introduction to Indian street food generally
Nikesh is an engaging and knowledgeable guide, speaking good English, and his tour covered a wide cross-section of Mumbai. A challenge for us was that I had just had major surgery on my hip and was still partially on crutches. Although I'm pretty agile, we hadn't realised quite how much walking the tour involved. And Nick's natural inclination is to walk VERY quickly. He did his best to slow down but I suspect this was rather difficult for him! In the end, we sadly had to bail on the last couple of stops. Luckily my husband and I were the only two in the group so it didn't matter. In retrospect we would have preferred to have been introduced to more purely local dishes instead of the Keralan thali - Mumbai's famous vada pav, for instance, wasn't even included. But perhaps Nick had this planned as a surprise for the final stop?
I hate pre-packaged tours, and te great advantage of this one is that you can customise it. I know Mumbai quite well, but there were many places I didn't know about or had never got around to visiting, and this was perfect. However, if you are new to Mumbai, my engaging and helpful guide Rakesh's description of what he would suggest sounded really good to me. An air-conditioned car with a driver as well as a guide was perfect for a single or a couple,, or they will provide larger vehicles for larger groups. I suggest you do a little research yourself online, as there are places slightly off the beaten track that might be of interest.
My husband and I booked this tour while in Mumbai on a cruise. The tour included 3 other couples. Our experience included much more than just food! The guide, Shailesh, encouraged us to ask any questions we had about the city, culture, etc. and was open and honest when answering. The variety of food was excellent and it was wonderful to travel by local train, taxi, and bus. We would absolutely recommend this tour to others!
Fun experience: definitely tried some things that we would not have otherwise. More than just a food tour, it helped us learn a bit about other parts of Mumbai. It did feel a bit rushed--we hustled through markets and other areas without time to even look up. Also, it would have been really nice to be given a handout with the names of the foods we tried (and the places).
Sagar was a wonderful host and this tour was the best thing we did in Indian. The food is amazing and he takes you to places you'd unlikely ever find on your own. He was a fantastic guide and I can highly recommend this tour for anyone with an adventurous palette wanting to see a bit of India with the help of a native. Highly recommended!!
