What to Expect
This full-day tour of Mumbai takes you to all the places mentioned in the 2003 novel Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, a story set in the underworld of contemporary Mumbai. This is an offbeat tour where you visit narrow lanes and crowded bazaars, and experience the city as the author described it.

You will start the tour with a visit to the Sassoon Docks, one of the oldest docks in Mumbai and also one of the few in the city open to the public. Situated just off Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai, it holds one of largest fish markets in the city today. Experience the smell of prawns as Shantaram once did and see the grey strips of ribbon fish hung out to dry.

You will then visit the Bazaar Gate, where you will discover the history of the city from the 16th century Portuguese settlers to the British rule. Bombay developed into a trading port and center of commerce with European merchants and shipbuilders – creating a bustling cosmopolitan town.

After visiting the Bazaar Gate you will continue on to Pydhonie, which lies in the neighborhood of South Mumbai. Pydhonie, meaning “a place where feet are washed”, separates the predominantly Muslim population of the eastern part of the inner city from the mainly Hindu part to the west. The main landmark in the neighborhood is the Mumba Devi Temple, moved here from the Fort area in 1737 or 1766.

You will then move further on to Bhendi Bazaar, a popular place for shopping for antiques and hardware items located in South Mumbai. There are other markets surrounding Bhendi Bazaar such as Crawford Market (Phule Market), Chor Bazaar, Nul Bazar, and other small markets. Bhendi Bazaar is primarily a Muslim-populated area (particularly Dawoodi Bohras) but the shop-owners and hawkers in this market belong to many different religious groups.

Continuing on, you will proceed to Bhaji Galli, where you can buy all types of fruits and vegetables. Bhaji Galli is a small lane that stretches from Grant Road Station, making it a popular stop for commuters to shop for vegetables on their way home. If you come at peak hours, a cacophony of hundreds of voices will greet you selling everything from tomatoes to greens. Bhaji Galli has over 3 hundred licensed vegetable and fruit vendors and some of them only keep specific kinds of vegetables.

After completing the tour of Bhaji Galli you will visit Khau Galli, a great place to enjoy Mumbai's street food. Mumbaikars love to savor street food, from sinking their teeth into kheema ghotala and savoring hot fafda jalebi to enjoying the usual bun maska with chai – they relish every cuisine available in the nooks and corners of the bustling city. One of the main reasons why Khau Galli is so popular is because it has tasty food at cheap prices.

The tour ends with a visit to Arthur Road Jail. Built in 1926, it is Mumbai's largest and oldest prison and houses most of the city's prisoners. A few decades ago, this prison was one of the most feared in India and it is here where the protagonist Lindsay was beaten and tortured for no reason in Shantaram.
