What to Expect
Mumbai is home to some of India’s greatest art galleries. On this 6-hour art walk you’ll gain an understanding of modern Indian art and its evolution over the years.
You’ll visit several galleries that showcase different schools of Indian art. As this is a group walk, you can use the tour as a first step in identifying something that you might like to return to later and purchase.
The tour begins on Mahatma Gandhi Road at the National Gallery of Modern Art. In addition to its fantastic art exhibitions it is also famous for its interior that features a central dome and elegant horseshoe-shaped balconies. Today, the museum hosts numerous exhibitions and collections of famous artists and sculptors.
Across the road is the Indo-Saracenic Prince of Wales Museum. Founded in the early 20th century, it was built to commemorate the visit of the then Prince of Wales. The museum collection comprises around 50,000 artifacts of art, archeology, and natural history.
Continuing on the walk you’ll come to the prestigious Jehangir Art Gallery, a landmark institution on the Indian fine art map. This pioneering gallery opened in 1952 to give exclusive visibility to the work of Indian artists and sculptors. This gallery is the most sought-after venue for artists to exhibit their works.
You’ll also visit India’s oldest and most prestigious art school, the Sir J.J. School of Art. Located on the heritage stretch between VT station and Crawford Market, the recently refurbished Victorian building won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
