Top 10 things to do in Mumbai
If you've never been to India, a trip to Mumbai is a leap straight into the deep end! The country's richest and poorest live side by side in cultural, historical, and spiritual contradiction. Here are a few sightseeing essentials to get you started.
1. Gateway of India
Mumbai Harbor's vast monument was built to commemorate 1911's royal visit. The vibrant streetlife that has formed around it makes it a great starting point if you're new in town!
2. Shree Siddhivinayak Mandir
As one of India's most extravagant Hindu temples, the astonishing Shree Siddhivinayak provides tourists with fascinating insight into Mumbai's spiritual life.
3. Elephanta Island
Also known as Gharapuri, the island was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the labyrinth of Hindu temples carved into its stone caves between 450 and 750AD.
4. Mount Mary Church
The Catholic Basilica annually attracts thousands of pilgrims to its shrine of the Virgin Mary. If you can, go during September's Bandra Fair, which celebrates the Virgin's birth!
5. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus
Built in 1888, the vast train station blends Neo-Gothic, Hindu, and Islamic design into one of the city's architectural highlights. Just don't expect it to be as pretty inside!
6. Haji Ali Dargah
This imposing mosque is also the tomb of Sufi saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. It can only be reached via a narrow walkway at low tide so plan your visit accordingly!
7. Dhobi Ghat
Open-air laundries are a common sight across India, but Mumbai boasts the world's largest! You can go inside, but the best views of washermen at work come from the bridge above it.
8. Global Vipassana Pagoda
Learn to meditate from 10:00AM to 6:00PM at the breathtaking Buddhist Stupa modelled on Myanmar’s Shwedagon Pagoda. Entrance is free, but foreign visitors must provide ID.
9. Bollywood
Mumbai is the center of India's film industry, so why not catch a flick at the famous Eros Cinema? Alternatively, enjoy a tour of its largest studio complex – Film City!
10. Sanjay-Gandhi-Nationalpark
Surprisingly, the sprawling, densely populated metropolis has a national park within its city limits! Arrive early though – many of its attractions are closed by lunchtime.
Planning Your Visit
How many days?
Mumbai is perfect for a quick weekend visit, but if you're planning on more than simply sightseeing, book 3 or 4 full days.
How safe is it?
Mumbai is a busy, unpredictable city, and while it might not be especially dangerous, it pays to keep your wits about you. Avoid flaunting your cash in public and giving out personal details (including your travel plans). Also, visit with a companion. Violence against tourists is uncommon, but when it does happen, it tends towards those travelling alone.

What people are saying about Mumbai
Get your guide ran a faultless tour. Fantastic experience to travel from the picturesque dock near the Gateway to India and Hotel Taj. We were first promptly transported from our hotel by a nice young man who guided us to the ferry. The travel over on the large wooden ferry was a great way to interact with many Indian people who were lovely. On arrival at the Elephanta Island we were greeted by the guide who was fantastic. We caught a small train from the dock to the stairs area where some of our party were carried up the steep stairs on a seat carry system. He guided us thru the aspects of the main cave and it’s history. It’s amazing, but a little ruined by the Portuguese who used it as target practise. Many giant Indian deities carved in the walls. Had a brief shop at the market, which has great souvenirs on then returned back by ferry. Many ferry’s come and go so don’t panic about pissing one.
This was our first time in Mumbai and the tour was absolutely excellent. Our guide was very knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the history of Mumbai, it’s current development and the different religions there. Alam went out of his way to make sure we were able to experience the most authentic side of Mumbai and did an amazing job even though coronavirus restrictions are still in place. We chose to have the lunch option and the food was fantastic. The car we travelled in was well air conditioned and the social distancing elements were excellent. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone. Thank you so much.
This is a great tour of Mumbai my guide Nisar was wonderful and extremely knowledgeable. He had a great sense of humour and a great person to be with. He went out of his way to ensure we went at my pace and provided excellent guide services. Thank you Nisan for all your help and keep singing I hope to see you on India’s got talent yaar
Very good activity especially to get to know Mumbai. The heavy traffic makes this a very good way to visit the city most important places. The driver was very friendly and a good companion helping me choosing the right places to see, where to eat or buy things cheaper.
It was a great trip, the driver/guide Arif was so kind and informative. He took many interesting places such as famous world heritage, Gate of India, Victoria Terminal station. Indeed learned a lot, Thank you very much, Truly appreciate it.
