Full description
Ascend to the summit of the craters of Mount Etna, one of the most coveted excursions a hiker can make. Hike in full safety with an authorized alpine and volcano guide, and marvel at the beauty and wonder of the highest active volcano in Europe, up to 3,000 meters. Depart from Sapienza Refuge in Nicolosi, and ascend 2,504 meters by cable car and begin your hike. You’ll hike 1.5 hours uphill, passing many craters, in particular toward the crater of the 2001 eruption and the moon-like landscape that marks out the area. During the hike you will take long pauses to take pictures and rest. You will then carry on exploring on your hike towards the Cisternazza and the Belvedere on the Valle del Bove, considered the best panoramic spot on Mount Etna on a dazzling volcanic depression dating back to 64000 years ago! Here you will take a break to cherish the surroundings, take a few pictures and simply admire the landscape as from up there you are able to see the coast from Taormina until Syracuse. From here you will reach the Barbagallo craters, up to 3,000 meters, the highest point allowed, and enjoy a privileged view on the summit craters and their constant emission of gases and water vapours. Then you will march back to 2500 mt and take the cable car back to the Rifugio Sapienza. Experience the incredible feeling of being on top of the world in this rocky, beautiful landscape with the giant sky above you.

This excursion was excellent. Pickup by Marina was on time in a nice Mercedes minivan. Marina was friendly and informative all the way through the trip. At Etna, everything was well organised. Trekking boots/shoes are definitely recommended along with layered clothing. Fleece, jacket etc. as weather can change quickly. The guide Edoardo was really friendly and knowledgable. You visit a number of the Etna craters, but it’s dependant on the weather of course. The walk/climb is at a steady pace with frequent stops for information and allow people to rest. So not difficult overall. In summary this trip was superb and highly recommended. It’s simply stunning up there on Etna.

We booked a trip to Mount Etna which included a cable car ride up to 2500m and a hike up to 2900m (we reached 2890m according to my sports watch). Upon arrival at the meeting point at the lower starting station of the cable car, we were given helmets, tickets for the cable car, and we were offered hiking equipment for those who needed it. At the upper station, we were divided into English and Italian groups and we received basic safety instructions. Along the way, the guide explained to us interesting facts about the locations we visited, the types of stones and their colors. We also visited places where hot steam comes out and where we could really warm up a bit. The locations we passed, the view of the top of Etna as well as the view of all the other craters, Valle del Bove and the coast is simply spectacular and leaves you speechless. We should also mention Mrs. Marina, who picked us up at the hotel and returned us to the hotel after the trip. A very pleasant and relaxed ride

The tour was very interesting and informative. We learnt a lot about volcanoes and volcanic activity, different types of lava rocks. We saw amazing landscapes and took a lot of nice pictures. Good hiking shoes, long hiking pants, a decent windbreaker jacket, sunglasses and a sunscreen cream are a must, it can be 3-6 degrees Celsius up there in April despite a lot of sun.
