Don't miss the main attractions in Moscow which includes: the Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil's Cathedral, GUM store and Lenin's Mausoleum.
What to Expect
During this walking tour, you'll learn the most interesting facts about the main sites in central Moscow. Visit the architectural ensemble of the Moscow Kremlin, a UNESCO World Heritage site with the exception of the State Kremlin Palace (formerly Palace of Congresses). From the 14th till the 17th century, there was a fortified moat (Alevizov) just on the Red Square. Towers of the Kremlin were decorated with two-headed eagles for several hundred years since the XVII century. In 1935, Stalin decided to replace them with five-pointed stars. During WWII, the Kremlin and Red Square were disguised as residential areas, and the Kremlin stars and domes were painted in black. Thanks to this disguise, pilots of hostile aircrafts were unable to find the main square.
The oldest building in Moscow is Assumption Cathedral built in 1474-1479. GUM and St.Basil Cathedral were both planned to be demolished and in the place of GUM was planned to a building for the People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry and the Cathedral simply interfered with mass organized parades.
