Skadar Lake Sightseeing: Explore Montenegro's National Park

Skadar Lake Sightseeing: Explore Montenegro's National Park

We begin the boat trip passing through the small channels of River Crmnica that leads from Virpazar to the open lake, a large area that offers a first approach to the immensity of the lake. Here, we can see in the distance other part of the lake that connects with Albania, and it is possible to perceive their mountains. Then, passing under a bridge (where pass a famous railway to join Serbia on the main road « Belgrade -Bar » ) you will have a view on the legendary fortress Lessendro built in the 18th century by our king Petar II Petrovic Njegos. We continue our cruise on the Moraca river, seeing the biggest island of the lake called « Vranjina », on the way. The bridge links the two villages, Vranjina and Virpazar by the main road. Passing through a small natural bird reserve, you can see crested grebes, grey herons, cormorants and other bird species. You will discover the perfect beauty of nature as you pass through small canals carved out of the reeds. Once we’ve crossed these canals, you will discover a vast area of the Skadar lake covered by water lilies, white lotuses and other species (depending on the season). This vast area offers an incredible panoramic view of the floating plants. Lake Skadar is an ideal place for fishing and bird-watching, as there are many species of fish and birds. During the boat trip, listening to the sounds of the birds and observing nature offers an interlude of peace, serenity and relaxation. Sailing around three islands known as « Mala and Velika Cakovica » and « Kamenik », you will have an opportunity to enjoy a wild and unique view of Skadar Lake. On the way back, you will have the option to go swimming in the middle of the lake if you want to experience it. It’s a chance to feel alive and connected to nature.

Immerse yourself in the freshness of the water while having the majestic mountain ranges in your background, and delve into the captivating stories and rich history of Lake Skadar. Begin in Virpazar, the main gateway to Lake Skadar. Sail along a tiny river channel and observe birds catch the fish and soar through the sky. Exit the river and discover the vast blue waters of Lake Skadar, the far-away mountains of Albania, and Vranjina, along with its two peaks. Glide through the meadows of water chestnuts and discover the ruins of Lesendro, the 18th-century fortress and the Key of Lake Skadar. These ruins and their bird visitants will feast you with a stunning view. Feel the fresh air rush through your body as you reach Lake Skadar's largest tributary, Morača River. Continue your journey in the direction of three islands – Mala Čakovica, Velika Čakovica, and Kamenik. Have your breath taken away by the view these islets hide. Marvel at thousands of water lilies covering the lake's surface with their dark green leaves. Sights to follow will satisfy your traveller's thirst as well. As you sail along the picturesque fjord Pavlova strana, you will reach Rijeka Crnojevića, a small fishing village. Explore this beautiful spot, situated only a few kilometres from the historical capital of Cetinje. The old stone bridge, named after Prince Danilo, will be the first to welcome you, next to the one-story building built on the left shore of the river. You can't overlook it – it lies at the entrance of this beautiful townlet, and although built in the 15th century, it still looks impressive. After exploring the village, it's time to go back. In the meantime, be sure to bring your swimsuit! Take the opportunity to enjoy the refreshing waters of Lake Skadar.
