Full description
Hand-feed hummingbirds and marvel at the variety of bird life at the Rocklands Sanctuary on a 2-hour tour from Montego Bay. The Rocklands Bird Sanctuary, located just outside Montego Bay, was owned and run for many years by Lisa Salmon, and continues to be run as a sanctuary following her death. Her nephew Fitz is now in charge, and has been associated with the site for 15 years. The sanctuary is home to thousands of birds from Jamaica and migrant birds who have flown thousands of miles to feed here. The Red-billed Streamertail and Jamaica Mango are so tame that they will come straight to a handheld bottle of sugar water and some will even sit on your finger to feed. Jamaica has 4 resident species of hummingbird, 3 of which can be found at the Rocklands Sanctuary, but the fourth, the Black-billed Streamertail, is found only on the very eastern part of the island. Put some seed on your hand to attract the Black-faced Grassquit, Yellow-faced Grassquit, and Orangequit. See the Bananaquit and Greater Antillean Bullfinch hopping around the feeders. There’s an outdoor patio area where you can sit and watch birds such as the Jamaican Oriole using the feeders. The Common Ground-Dove and Caribbean Dove can be seen around the gardens, looking for the seed provided in the sanctuary.

We felt that Patrick was an awesome guide. He was prompt, figured the best way to get close to the port terminal so my mobility-impaired father-in-law easily reached the car. He watched over the drive and managed to avoid MOST of the pot holes on the way to the sanctuary - no easy feat! Plus he managed our time and let us know gently when it was time to head back. We LOVED Rocklands and thought the two gentlemen who visited with us and took photos with our cameras were just great. We didn't have a PLETHORA of hummingbirds come to land (one of the other hummingbirds was a bully!) but we had enough to make it interesting! I would go back and enjoy the lovely patio and gorgeous Montego Bay view.

I was impressed with how well Patrick Vessell treated me with respect and drove safely and mindful. I was also impressed with the friendliness and the knowledge that the man at the Sanctuary was and answered all of my questions. All were so friendly and kind.

Mr.Patrick was very nice and I booked this last minute and he changed his schedule around to accommodate me. People had complained about potholes in the road and he said, " you will not feel one pot hole and it was true " he is a very good driver. He was so nice to take photos for me while I fed many birds. I thank him from the bottom of my heart as it was a wonderful day. Plus I am a solo traveler of female gender and I was very safe which is extremely important. This excursion was top notch and my most favorite thing to do while in Jamaica! Wish I had one more day as I would have hired Patrick to take me on a tour around the city! Rockland bird sanctuary is a magical experience I never wanted to leave :). It's peaceful and to be that close too a hummingbird is a thrill of a lifetime. I must have fed close to 20 that day. My driver said I was very lucky most people only feed one or two. I say to everyone wear the appropriate colors! I urge everyone to go! 5 stars!
