Full description

Discover one of the world's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites with a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel abbey. Explore the site with a self-guided tour aided by an information booklet and learn the fascinating history of the site entirely at your own pace.

The worship of Saint Michel was introduced on the holy mount in 708 and it became one of the most important places of medieval pilgrimage. Benedictine Monks began building an abbey here in the 10th century.   The abbey has withstood the assaults of man, time, and the elements. The heroic resistance of the mount to English attacks during the Hundred Years’ War (14th and 15th centuries) made it a symbol of French national identity.

Monks left the abbey in 1790 and it was listed as a historic monument in 1874. The whole site has been returned to its former glory thanks to ongoing restoration work.

Our trip to Mont Saint Michel was great. A bit of tourist advise…wait to purchase souvenirs on your way back down from the Abbey tour. We made the newbie mistake of buying from the first shops we encountered and spent the whole trek up the stairs (there are plenty of stairs) lugging an extra bag of weight. Other than that, the Abbey was awe-inspiring.

We loved our visit to the abby once inside, getting in was a bit tricky. We arrived after our time slot and were directed to change our ticket time at no cost. There wasn’t a booklet that was provided and when I asked was handed a pamphlet with some basic info. Once we got started we followed the info on the pamphlet and enjoyed learning as we went. We’re glad we opted for the self-guided option, as the groups who were in a guided tour got stuck along the narrow streets and on the stairs.
