The 7 Best Things to Do in Mont Saint-Michel

Mont Saint-Michel appears on the horizon like a pyramid that seemingly floats between the sea and the sky. A half-mile away from dry land, this island of stunning medieval architecture is surrounded, by turns, tall grasses and ocean water.

Fortifications of Mont Saint-Michel

The fortifications during the Hundred Years' War protected the abbey from a 30-year siege. Four centuries later, it was also a prison during and after the French Revolution.

La Porte du Roi

The King's Gate is the third of three gates, and the person who guarded it did so in the name of the king. The portcullis shows where a drawbridge once crossed over a moat.

La Grande Rue

You'll feel as if you've stepped into a fairytale village while making your way to the abbey along this main street, which leads to the 350-step Grand Degré staircase.

Eglise Paroissial

The small, 11th-century parish church has a silver replica of St. Michael. Mère Poulard, who was famous for cooking omlettes for visitors at her inn, lies buried in the cemetery.

Tour du Nord

A walk along the Ramparts Pathway, or the Chemin des Remparts, leads you to fortification towers, including the North Tower and the stunning views it provides.

Terrasse de l'Ouest

The Grand Western Terrace of the abbey offers an amazing panorama of the coastline and the sand banks of the exposed tidal bay.

Tour Gabriel

French military engineer Garbriel de Puy built the tower on the western side of Mont Saint-Michel in 1524, in order to complete the defensive outer walls.

What People Are Saying About Mont Saint-Michel

Worth the effort of climbing all the steps

Quite busy in the morning. Preferably arrive there around noon. Very impressive but you have to be aware of the hundreds of steps that take you to the top. It's worth doing it but prepare mentally that especially on hot days it can get quite exhausting. Beautiful views on top and special atmosphere in the abbey.

Worth the trip in every sense of the word!

Mont Saint Michel was majestic and well worth the trip to go see. I am so very glade we did this with a guide. He offered us plenty of insightful information and made sure we kept a good pace. His tips were valuable. You only downside is that you felt you didn't have unite enough time at the mount to look at the village. Aside from that the trip there and back was nice and restful with plenty of majestic Normandy region
