Full description
Head out to the Dandenong Ranges from Melbourne on board Puffing Billy, Australia’s lovable steam train. Australia's oldest steam railway, Puffing Billy dates back to 1900. It recreates the romance of those bygone days of traveling under the power of steam. The full afternoon train ride takes you along the Dandenong Ranges National Park, which consists mostly of rolling hills, steeply weathered valleys, and gullies covered in thick temperate rainforest. See swathes of tall Mountain Ash, and dense ferny undergrowth. Sit back and watch the beautiful scenery roll by. As you head back to Melbourne, you will stop at Sassafras or Olinda, one of the quaint little craft villages in the area. Capture the magic of the old saying "The Romance of the Rail." As you chug along, you will get the chance to feed the native crimson rosella parrots, enjoy Devonshire afternoon tea, and take in the beautiful scenery of the Victoria countryside.

    The lead up was stressfull

We had our tickets and pick up time from the hotel, the evening prior to our trip we were informed we had to go to a different hotel over an hour earlier than our original pick up time. Our concierge did manage to get them to pick up at our hotel but at 07.10 not 8.15a.m. This was a shame as the day started badly, we were on the bus until about 9.15 most of this time waiting in a side street for a space to park for the main pick up. Once were did start on the tour our driver/guide was excellent and so knowledgeable. Puffing Billy was an experience and took me back to my childhood. There was plenty of space in our garage so it was easy to look and take photographs. The Devonshire cream tea was delicious but it was strange eating it at 10.30in the morning.

Fantastic trip. Driver who picked us up from hotel. which was an unexpected bonus add on after booking confirmation. The bus trip was informative with the bonus of a fantastic devonshire morning tea of divine scones jam and cream followed by the short bus trip down to the train station and the highlight of our trip the train ride with great views as we puffed and chuffed our way thru the forest. Then to finish another great adventure on the bus as he showed us more of the Dandenong ranges as we wended our way home to Melbourne city. My husband needed a wheelchair and at no time were we made to feel a nuisance as the driver readily placed the folded up chair out of the way during our bus journey. Highly recommend this trip to one and all. Firstly for the scenery, then the novelty/nostalgia of the steam train, and last but by no means least the friendliness of all concerned in offering the service from the driver to the railway volunteers and the cafe staff.

    A good morning out

We were booked on a Sunday tour but they didn't have the numbers to continue, so we had to go on another less suitable day. The minibus driver did not introduce himself or explain the tour before we departed, but after approaching him, he was quite friendly and chatty. The train was great, but we did not have enough time in the small town we stopped at for a coffee or shopping. We had to rush back to Melbourne so the driver could take another tour out in the afternoon.
