Great to see that there are skippers who value the safety of animals and clients over sheer profit. We had booked a 5-hour Whale Watching and Dolphin Swimming Tour – and even though we returned early due to bad weather in the afternoon, the trip was totally worth it. We got to see a few sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, and spinner dolphins and could even swim with a pod of spinner dolphins. Throughout the entire trip, the crew showed great respect towards the animals – unlike most of the other skippers we encountered that day. While other skippers let their clients swim extremely close to whales or even did it themselves (which is against the law), we watched the whales from our boat, so as not to disturb them. One whale even thanked us by swimming very closely around our boat because there were no swimmers near it. When encountering dolphins, our skippers also didn't charge at them at full speed like other boats did, but kept a safe distance and calmly approached the animals.

Full description

Climb aboard a speedboat with a capacity for no more than 8 people plus 2 skippers and set off an amazing speedboat trip along the Black River coast of Mauritius. Benefit from a detailed briefing to learn how to respect the environment and hear the rules of approaching the dolphins to cause them minimum disturbance. Get the chance to enter the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to get up close to the magnificent marine mammals in their natural habitat. Encounter native spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins playing in the ocean, and end with a snorkeling session at the amazing coral reefs. Then, look for whales and get a 60% chance of seeing them. Encounter majestic humpback whales between June and October and resident sperm whales all year round.

Guides were friendly and informative, trying their best to get us a whale sighting. Took us a while to see some whales but we managed to see a pair of them in the water. Unfortunately other boat tours weren’t as respectful of the whales and had multiple people jumping in the ocean to swim with them, this meant the whales swam away and we didn’t have very long to observe them. We saw a few dolphins in Tamarin bay and had the opportunity try and swim with them although they move fast! A good experience but I guess it comes down to luck and the behaviour of other boats/tours.
