The sunrise itself was most definitely 5 stars. The fact that it is impossible to log onto the park website to get a pass to go up by yourself because all of these bus companies take all of the passes is definitely 1 star. Lastly, the tour guide was wildly knowledgeable and clearly loved the mountain and flora/fauna of the area, but also weirdly pushy about required audience participation at 3am (after he told us all we should nap on the way up). He also told us we should’ve researched our activity more because we didn’t know enough about the environment surrounding the sunrise. It was a slightly different experience. I chose to walk to another area so I wasn’t being chastised that early in the morning lol. 5 star sunrise though.

They picked us up at a meeting point that was quite simple to get to and then a couple of hours' climb to the place itself, with relaxing music. They pass you jackets in case you do not bring, since it is very cold. then they invite you to stand in the viewpoint and wait for the sunrise, in our case we had to wait about 40 minutes and it was something beautiful, at the moment the sun begins to appear the locals begin to sing a beautiful Hawaiian melody in relation to the Haleakala. Then on the way down our guide told us a lot about the history of Hawaii and his experience living on the island. Then we went to a restaurant to have breakfast that, although it was not quick to arrive nor was it so overwhelming, we did not consider this to lower the rating. At least the place has a nice view. Then they left us at the same meeting point.

Our family did the sunrise Haleakala tour in February. It was awesome and an experience our teens will never forget. It's cold up top (and we came from snow) so definitely ask for the warm jackets they provide. It was great to get picked up at our hotel, driven to the top and given guided commentary the whole way through. You will see the sun start to appear and then in front of you and behind you is slowly filled with brilliant colors and an extraordinary scene unfolds. A must-do Maui activity!
