From Nagoya: Inuyama Castle, Ena Gorge, Magome, Tsumago Tour

From Nagoya: Inuyama Castle, Ena Gorge, Magome, Tsumago Tour

Depart from Nagoya Station and head to Inuyama Castle, built during the Muromachi Shogunate period. It is located on a hill next to the Kiso River and is also called Baidi Castle. The name of the castle was indeed reminiscent of the poem "Early Departure from Baidi Castle" written by Li Bai. Inuyama Castle is one of the twelve ancient castle towers existing in Japan, and its style is relatively old. Together with Himeji Castle, Matsumoto Castle, and Hikone Castle, it is also known as one of the "Four National Treasure Castles in Japan". It has 3 floors on the outside, 4 floors on the inside, and 2 floors underground, which is rare among Japanese castles. Continue to the Ena Gorge, a man-made lake formed when the Kiso River was intercepted to build the Oi Dam about 80 years ago. It was named Ena Gorge by geographer Shige Subaru in 1920. Ena Gorge is dotted with strange rocks formed by natural erosion, starting from the man-made lake formed by intercepting the Kiso River by Oi Dam and continuing to the Nakatsu River upstream. The Umbrella Rock, which is like a piercing into the ground, is a natural protected area of the country. It and the red rock covered with brown moss are both representatives of the strange rocks and rocks in the canyon. In spring, about 200 cherry blossom trees bloom in Ren Park, complementing the beautiful azaleas. In summer, the red Einakyo Bridge is highlighted by the rich green trees, while in autumn, red leaves and maple leaves add color to the lake surface. In winter, mandarin ducks and starlings will fly here, making it suitable for bird observation. The charm of Ena Gorge varies throughout the year. Next, visit Magome-juku, the 43rd of the 69 campsites on the Nakasendo Road built in the Edo period. It is about 332 kilometers away from Edo Nihonbashi, the starting point of the Nakasendo Road. It is built with stones on both sides of the steep mountain road. After Tokugawa Ieyasu unified the country, he began to repair roads. A total of five roads were built starting from Edo (Tokyo). Among them, the 540-kilometer "Nakasendo" became the only way for merchants to travel. The streets of Magome-juku are still paved with stone pavements from those days, and the wooden houses on both sides are home to various stores. There are many ancient tea shops, izakayas, art shops, and hotels. Colorful flowers are planted in front of each house. The wells and waterwheels used back then have been preserved, adding to the ancient feel. Finally, visit Tsumago-juku, a charming little place. The post road between Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku has now become a popular place for hiking and has been awarded one star in the Michelin Green Guide.

4 Day - From Nagano to Kanazawa: Ultimate Central Japan tour

Starting at Nagano Station, the tour opens with a bang by including a visit to the Zenkoji Temple. One of the most important Buddhist temples in Japan, the main building here is 300 years old and displays amazing craftsmanship; Meanwhile, the history of the temple complex as a whole stretches back well over 1,000 years. With some quick stops for sake tasting and lunch, the day continues with a hike through pristine forest to reach the onsen baths and volcanic valley which the Snow Monkeys call their home. Here you can get up close and personal with the monkeys as they walk mere centimeters away from you, or bathe in the hot spring baths right before your eyes. On day two of the tour, our tour bus will pick you up in the morning and drive you to Matsumoto to walk through the streets of this beautiful and cultured city before ascending to the top of Matsumoto Castle. At over 400 years old, this castle is considered one of the best in Japan. Descending from the castle, the tour bus will next escort you deep into the Japanese Alps, to a breathtaking river valley known as Kamikochi. One of the original National Parks of Japan, the reason it has been registered as such will be immediately obvious by its stunning natural beauty and well preserved environment. Afterwards, the tour bus will take you on to Takayama city, where you will stay the night to be ready for the next day of the tour. The second half of this tour kicks off in Takayama, a city with preserved traditional streets lined with handsome wooden buildings that could rival Kyoto. Located in the middle of all this is the Takayama Jinya, once the administrative office of the Shogun in Takayama and today the last remaining building of its kind in Japan. Access to the interior of the Jinya is of course included on our tour, and your guide will regale you with stories and information about the heyday of Takayama while showing you around this unique cultural site. With a break to try some local snacks and do some window shopping, the tour bus will once again pick you up to deliver you to Shirakawa-go, the Unesco World Heritage village of steep, thatched roof homes designed to withstand the snow and cold during the long winters in Central Japan. While the winter scenery of Shirakawa-go is deservedly world-famous, the area is beautiful in any season. Leaving Shirakawa-go, the tour bus will continue to our final destination, Kanazawa. Upon waking up the next morning, your guide will meet you at Kanazawa Station to start a complete one day walking tour of the city that includes entrance to a Samurai house, Matcha tea on the grounds of Kanazawa Castle, and a visit to the Geisha District of Higashi-chaya, the symbol of Kanazawa. On the way back, your guide will lead you through the small but maze like district of Kazue-machi, a lesser known geisha district across the river from Higashi-chaya which still has working geisha wandering its streets.

Visiting the monkey park was one of the best part of our Japan trip this visit! David was a great host and got us there and back without any incident - he was even flexible with the schedule. The itinerary on the website was unrealistic from Tokyo though so if you plan to visit all the attractions listed, you will be disappointed. It took us 11 hours and we only went to the monkey park, lunch and one stop at the Lego store in Nagano (our request). There was a lot of traffic so maybe during a less busy time you could get to a few more of the stops but I can't imagine making it to them all. Overall great trip and we'd do it again!

Snowy Mountain Park is beautiful with snow and forest around. There are lots of monkeys which are lovely and dorable. Great experience. Matsumoto Castle is smaller than expected. But it is still an appealing castle. And I won't be able to find "Sanzoku mountain" without the help of the helpful driver, Sikander. Great thanks! Please repay Sikander's additional working hours. The two places are far away. It takes plenty of time travelling. I won't be able to travel to places within 1 day without your help.

Arslan was excellent from start to finish. Very attentive and super professional. After our tour provider didn’t show up on the day of our Booked trip, Arslan kindly accepted our last minute booking and was professional the entire time. Also. A trip to the monkey pass was worth it! It was definitely the highlight of our trip!

It’s a long drive but worth going to the see the snow monkeys. My kids really loved the experience. Our guide was very friendly and helpful.

Seeing the snow monkeys was a super fun experience! Fun trip and activity to do as a family.
