Full description
You will meet with your authorized guide at Piazza Vittorio Veneto from where you will begin your visit of the city of Matera, the European Capital of Culture 2019 and a UNESCO-listed site.

Piazza Vittorio Veneto is a beautiful 19-century square from where you will enjoy panoramic views of the Civita and the Sasso Barisano. You will pass through the underground areas of the Piazza, with your descent beginning in Sasso Caveoso, an ancient quarter carved into the rock. It will be in this location that you will be able to see small squares, alleys, and cave houses.

Throughout the walk you will visit the Madonna della Bruna Cathedral, the rupestrian churches Madonna dell' Idris and San Giovanni Monterrone, and the Vicinato cave-house. The cave house is an ancient dwelling of the Materan peasant civilization that illustrates the uses and customs of the area's ancestors. Your tour will eventually end with a tasting of some delicious Matera bread, wine, and bran peppers in extra virgin olive oil.
