1. Matera Tour: Taste and Handicraft

Visit the Sassi of Matera and taste traditional local products. From here you will continue towards the civita, the oldest part of Matera, where you'll discover the ancient history of the city carved into the rock. Be amazed by the presence of fascinating frescoed rock churches and cave dwellings, where the inhabitants lived until the beginning of the 20th century. Finally you will arrive at the Cathedral Santa Maria della Bruna, built in the Apulian Romanesque style. Stop in a bakery to taste focaccia with tomatoes and in a shop to taste traditional products such as cruschi peppers, cheeses and local ham with bread and extra virgin olive oil, and fried beans and taralli.

Matera: Guided Walking Tour of the Sassi with Light Lunch

2. Matera: Guided Walking Tour of the Sassi with Light Lunch

The Walking Guided Tour of the Sassi starts in Piazza Pascoli with a historical and anthropological introduction of the Sassi neighborhoods. The tour continues through the historic center. Along the way, the guide will illustrate Baroque churches such as the Church of Purgatory and the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi. After visiting Piazza Vittorio Veneto - the main square of the historic center - the guide will lead you to explore an extraordinary hypogeum environment and, afterward, typically furnished cave-house with household furniture and work tools used by farmers in the fields. Crossing the Barisano neighborhood you enter the Sasso Caveoso area, dominated by the Monterrone cliff. On the top of the cliff, as indicated by a wrought iron cross, there are two ancient places of worship: the two churches of Madonna dell'Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone completely carved into the rock. The tour continues with the visit to a rock-hewn church. Enjoy a light lunch, sampling Matera's traditional food delicacies and pairing it with fine local wine, right at the end of your guided tour.

Wonderful full day out to Matera and Puglia winery. Gio our guide was fantastic, sharing his knowledge of Matera and Puglia. He was very good answering all my questions. Both Gio and Julian our driver were friendly and very good company for the day. We started in the town of Matera and then walked down into the old town and historic area. We had a delicious lunch at a great restaurant in the old town. The food and service were outstanding. We stopped at a winery on the way home and had a generous wine tasting of several different varieties of wine all produced on site. Thank you Gio and Julian. My husband and I had a wonderful day. Thank you for your good company and for helping us learn more about Matera, Puglia and Italy. I highly recommend this tour and Green Italy Tours.

Angela was by far one of the best guides I’ve ever had on a tour. She had a direct connection to the Sassi as your grandfather lived there so you could see the genuine passion from her when she spoke about it. The food we sampled was spectacular and it was bountiful ! I anticipated small samples where I’d then would have to go get lunch but nope, stuffed after. The food highlight had to be the focaccia or the tor

Our guide Gio was fantastic. He more than exceeded our expectations. Explained historical sites in Matera and was well informed. He also took us to a fantastic winery for a tour and testing. I would highly recommend this tour.
