  • Explore the main monuments and Old Port of Marseille
Full description
Start your day with a guided walking tour of the historical heart of Aix-en-Provence. Visit Aix Cathedral and soak up the atmosphere of the narrow streets, squares, fountains and private mansions of the medieval city. Taste the foods of the region along the way. Then, drive to Cassis, famous for its cliffs and sheltered inlets known as "calanques." Considered by many as the "Little Saint Tropez" of Provence, the picturesque settlement is also famous for its seafood restaurants, small port and tiny town center. Relax on the beach, or take a mini-cruise through the natural canyons (not included), often compared to the fjords of Norway for their turquoise waters and white cliffs. Enjoy some free time at leisure for lunch, and then go on a short hike at the top of Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliff in Europe. Get a panoramic view of the Bay of Cassis and Mediterranean Sea before the journey to Marseille. Upon arrival in Marseille, discover the main monuments of the ancient city, established around 600 BC by colonists coming from Phocaea. Visit the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde and get 360-degree panoramic views. Stroll around the Old Port (Vieux-Port) and go to the 17th-century fortification of Fort Saint-Jean, now part of the new Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM).

GetYourGuide needs to give customers the exact meeting location. In my case, the instruction was to meet at the Radisson Hotel. But when we got there, there was no guide. I had to call the office and was told the meeting place was at the Tourism office. Anyway, the staff told us to wait at the hotel and the guide would to come to meet us.

A tour worth every cent

Our guide was Edouard. He is a local who has lived in Marsaille since childhood and is now raising his family there. He has a passion for history which makes him ideal for this tour because everything in this region is historical. He spoke English fluently and was easy to understand. We were picked up in a new and clean Mercedes passenger van and Edouard drove safely throughout the day. He expertly navigated the cities that we visited, knew the right places to stop for lunch, took us to a confectionery store to sample some local delicacies and explained the histories of the places we visited. At one point we started a contest to see who could craft a question that could stump him. I don't believe a winner was declared. If you're in Marsaille and have the time you should book this tour.

OUTSTANDING, beautiful, educational, and enjoyable experience!

Our guide LEO was most knowledgeable, very passionate about the region, and provided the right amount of freedom to experience maximum enjoyment of the tour. Leo, a native to Marseille, described each site in such a way that we gained far more insight than any tour we have taken in the past 12 years.
