The Three Cities is a collective description of the three fortified cities of Cospicua, Birgu (Vittoriosa), and Senglea. The oldest of the Three Cities is Vittoriosa, which has existed since prior to the Middle Ages. The other two cities, Senglea and Cospicua, were both founded by the Order of the Knights of Saint John in the 16th and 17th centuries respectively. During this half day tour, you will have the opportunity to appreciate these unique historical fortified cities and admire magnificent churches, traditional piazzas, incredible fortifications, and architectural treasures found all around the Three Cities area. Pieces of living history kept alive by hundreds of years of preservation! We start with a panoramic drive past the city of Cospicua, a double fortified harbour city and the largest of the three cities, to reach the city of Vittoriosa, this glorious city has been inhabited since the time of the Phoenicians, but the current city dates back from the time of the Order of the Knights of Saint John. Vittoriosa was chosen as the capital city of Malta instead of Mdina upon the arrival of the Order in the year 1530. Enjoy a fascinating walking tour through the narrow streets of the city admiring and appreciating all the historical buildings and captivating treasures found at every twist and turn. Upon arrival at the stunning Vittoriosa waterfront, board a traditional Maltese “Frejgatina” (a small, carvel-built fishing boat) for a delightful tour of the colourful harbour creeks. The tour ends at Senglea, named after Claude De La Sengle, the Grand Master who founded the city, Senglea is also known as “Civitas Invicta” a name given to the city for managing to resist the Ottoman invasion during the Great Siege of 1565. The island on which Senglea lies was joined by a land bridge to Cospicua during the time of the Knights of St. John and as a result, it became peninsular in shape. From the Gardjola Gardens located at the tip of the peninsula enjoy a stunning 360° view of the Grand Harbour, including the impressive Fort Sant Angelo, from where the Grand Master Jean Perisot De La Valette led the defence of the island during the Great Siege of 1565. Mt. Etna The largest and most active volcano in Europe. The climb to the crater takes us through picturesque villages and an ever changing landscape. The lower slopes of the volcano are extremely fertile with groves of oranges, lemons and other Mediterranean flora and of course vines which produce Sicily’s best wines. We go through forests of chestnut trees which gradually give way to oak, beech, birch and pine. Syracuse Syracuse is one of the loveliest cities in Sicily. We tend to forget that it was once the most important city in Western Europe. The city owes its origin to the Greek settlers who, from 733 BC onwards, turned Sicily into Magna Graecia, when Greece ruled not only the Mediterranean but also the known world. Ortigia - Ancient Syracuse, is in fact an island, now joined to the mainland by a short bridge. It is the heart and soul of Syracuse, where the Greeks, for reasons of defense, decided to found their new city. Ortygia was in recent years given a face lift and is attracting more and more visitors. Piazza Duomo - At the centre of Ortygia is the Piazza Duomo, with the Duomo taking pride of place. The Duomo is unique, no other word for it. It was built by the Greeks as the Temple of Athena. When the Byzantines conquered Syracuse, instead of demolishing the temple, as so often happened, they converted it into a Christian church. The Normans modified the interior and built a more Christian façade. When the façade was destroyed in the 1693 earthquake the baroque façade which we see today was erected. - Kindly contact me in case the date you have in mind is not available- - The Maltese Tile, an extraordinary heritage from Maltese art and culture. - The relaxing activity is based in my studio, which is situated in an Urban Conservation area, and within a traditional Maltese Townhouse which I am turning into a living arts space. You will be given brief historical information about the Maltese Tiles, then you will create a base for a coaster sized tile using white cement (size 10 x 10cm) which can be used as a souvenir. Your tiles do not need to be baked, therefore you can paint them and take them with you home straightaway in one of my handmade boxes :) I will show you how the tile is done from concept to realization, you will be designing your own pattern (or use the ones we have available), transfer the design to the mold, and finally painting it! At the end you will be keeping the tile for yourself, and have something handmade (and Maltese) which you can take back home! Other things to note 1. To make one tile usually takes about 2 hours, but you are more than welcome to make more tiles at an extra expense of 4 euro each tile, or else buy a tile kit to take home starting from 5 euro 2. Day 1: Malta, Arrival Arrive at Valletta airport. Private transfer to the Hotel. Check-in and Overnight. Day 2 : Valletta and Mdina Breakfast in Hotel. Departure for a full-day excursion to explore the two Maltese capitals during the centuries.. pick up at the Hotel's hall, accompanied by your private guide you will start to visit the capital city Valletta, during the tour, you will visit the St. John's Cathedral within the masterpieces of Caravaggio, the Barraca Gardens and the Grand Master's palace (from outside) which houses the Maltese Parliament. Stop then at a local cafe' downtown where try the traditional Maltese pastries, Pastizzi and Qassata. Free time for lunch and shopping. In the afternoon transfer to the center of the island to visit the charming walled city of Mdina the ancient capital of Malta under the Arab domination. The tour will include a stop at the St.Paul's Church ( entrance not included) and time for strolling and enjoying panoramic views from the Mdina's Belvedere. Transfer to the Hotel and Overnight Day 3: Tree Cities, Marsaxlokk, Blue Grotto, Dingli Cliffs The driver will wait for you outside the hotel to escort you by private car to the beautiful Cottonera Area, for a walking tour. Including a stop at the ancient cities of Senglea, Birgu, and Cospicua, then the tour proceeds to the fisherman's village of Marsaxlokk. The waterfront here is lined with traditional fishing boats known as ‘luzzus’ and is brightly painted in red, blue, and yellow adding vibrancy to this peaceful bay. Lunch in Marsaxlokk in a typical seafood restaurant. In the afternoon visit the Blue Grotto panoramic view, the impressive Dingli Cliffs, and the Megalithic Temples of Hagar Qim and Mnejidra. The tour concludes with a scenic coach ride back to the Hotel through the beautiful coastal road. Day 4: Gozo Island Private Tour Breakfast in Hotel. Pick up at the Hotel's hall,( 8:30 - 9:00 AM ) and transfer to Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal. Accompanied by a private English-speaking driver you will reach the Island of Gozo after a 20-minute ferry crossing. From the port of Mgarr, travel to the Ġgantija MegalithicTemples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Megalithic Temple in Malta. After that visit some of the main attractions, namely Ta' Pinu, Dwejra, and Ramla Bay. Then take a short break at the picturesque Xlendi Bay, where you will have some free time to stroll or try some delicious seafood at one of the many seafront restaurants. In the afternoon the tour goes to Victoria, exploring its charming narrow streets and markets before walking up to the Citadel of Gozo, a medieval fortress overlooking the entire island. Marvel at the stunning views of the countryside and the surrounding villages, before catching the ferry back to Malta. Transfer to the hotel and overnight Day 5: Departure Breakfast in Hotel.
