Marrakech: Handicrafts Souk Shopping Experience With A Local

The colorful and exotic markets of Marrakech can be chaotic for the uninitiated traveler; aromas of spices and baking bread mixed with the smells of centuries-old tanneries, loaded mules & donkeys passing by and merchants crying out their deals can be quite shocking if you are not well prepared.
The objective of this tour is to first introduce the traditional arts & crafts of Morocco as well as provide a local's tips to find your way around the centuries old markets.
We will meet at the Koutoubia tower nearby the UNESCO world heritage site, Jamaa El Fnaa Square and begin our discovery through the old medina's labyrinth of streets. Originally the souks were organized by trade; dyers, saddle-makers, olives, leather, spices, silver, wool, silk, cedar and thuya wood as well as bronze & copper but due the popularity of Marrakech it is harder to access the more authentic souks where real artisans still create and expose the hand-made products.
The 800 year old maze of markets is filled with touristy souvenirs shops and low quality copies, but... there is a flourishing market for contemporary artists and designers that collaborate with traditional craftsmen. This began over 50 years ago & has been gaining recognition throughout the African continent and globally ever since. Marrakech has now emerged as the "art capital" of Morocco, therefore we will also take time to discover the numerous art galleries, designer workshops that have launched this renaissance of arts & crafts. Depending on your interests, stops at hidden gems to see original creations including but not limited to; trendy accessories, bags, clothing, home decoration, carpets, ceramics and jewelry.
The tour includes a pause to share a mint tea with a local artist or craftsman to learn more about the materials and techniques they use as well as their lifestyle and sources of inspiration.
If time allows this can be the occasion for you to create your own tailor-made pieces. Local artisans can make your unique sandals or shoes for example in only a few hours. For leather jackets, bags or lanterns expect at least 48hrs. The possibilities are endless...
