Top Tours & Activities in Marken
The former island of Marken, connected by a causeway since 1957, boasts a seafaring heritage exemplary of Noord Holland. If the sight of clogs at the front door of quaint, wooden houses gets you excited while visiting, you can see how they're made right here.
These six former eel-smoking houses present Marken's maritime history and include a recreated fisherman's home interior from the 20th century.
Noted for its wooden ship models dangling from the walls, this protestant church dates to 1904.

Once a main fishing port, Volendam is only a half hour from Marken. The harbor boasts shops and fish stands, and rows of wooden houses along quaint streets.
"The small town of Edam is a half hour away, and the Cheese Market is abuzz with a re-enactment of daily life from its heydey, held on Wednesdays from 10:30AM - 12:30PM (July/August)."
Not only noted for its charming wooden houses, the town on the Zaan, just 30 minutes from Marken, also boasts eight well-preserved windmills, each having their own name.
You can download an app that offers various route planners that include the most scenic routes, or even one with windmills. Itineraries can take the entire day or just half.
"You can easily spend a nice day visiting Marken's attractions, but if you like the idea of tranquil island life, then add another day or two."
The center of Marken is compact and car-free, and you won't have a problem exploring by foot. Alternatively, you can rent a bike. What People Are Saying About Marken
Getting to the meeting point was convenient as it was only a 2 minute walk from Centraal. Unlike some tours which we had joined in other countries where getting to the meeting point in time without getting lost was most tiring and stressful, this was a breeze and we got to start the tour feeling relaxed and happy. The tour was well organised and the guide was most charming, informative and very clear in her delivery and reminders not to miss the bus. It was unfortunate that we could not spend more time at every stop, the windmills, the walk through the village and the shops, the cheese factory, the clog making factory, but given the 5.5hrs duration of this tour, we were very happy with the day's activities. Highly recommended.
Really enjoyed my day. There was lots to see. Guide was very freindly and welcoming. Full of information and very approchable. Even the drive to each place was enjoyable. Small group for the tour which made it more personal. Highly recommend it
