The 7 Best Things to Do in Marken

The former island of Marken, connected by a causeway since 1957, boasts a seafaring heritage exemplary of Noord Holland. If the sight of clogs at the front door of quaint, wooden houses gets you excited while visiting, you can see how they're made right here.

Marker Museum

These six former eel-smoking houses present Marken's maritime history and include a recreated fisherman's home interior from the 20th century.

Marken Grote Kerk

Noted for its wooden ship models dangling from the walls, this protestant church dates to 1904.

The Clog Experience

The Wooden Shoe Factory has been making this iconic footwear for over one hundred years. Demonstrations on clog production take place daily, and feel free to try one on for size.

Volendam Day Trip

Once a main fishing port, Volendam is only a half hour from Marken. The harbor boasts shops and fish stands, and rows of wooden houses along quaint streets.

Edam Day Trip

"The small town of Edam is a half hour away, and the Cheese Market is abuzz with a re-enactment of daily life from its heydey, held on Wednesdays from 10:30AM - 12:30PM (July/August)."

Zaanse Schans

Not only noted for its charming wooden houses, the town on the Zaan, just 30 minutes from Marken, also boasts eight well-preserved windmills, each having their own name.

Cycle Tour

You can download an app that offers various route planners that include the most scenic routes, or even one with windmills. Itineraries can take the entire day or just half.

Volendam, Marken and Windmills Tour from Amsterdam Reviewed by Douglas, 08/04/2016

It was the highlight of our trip in Amsterdam!

The tour leaders were extremely accommodating, experienced and the tour was very informative! Loved all aspects of it.

WONDERFUL TOUR! We had so much fun and saw so much!

Apostle (sp?) was a superb guide. We so enjoyed his good nature, and his wonderful commentary. The trip covered more territory than we thought- and he remained super good company despite the fact that some of our group was less than prompt. I could not have enjoyed the trip more. I felt I learned more in half a day than I do in a couple of days on my own! Truly- a wonderful trip. I wish I could take it again. And my pictures of the day were stunning! All my friends back home are so jealous.

Excellent knowledgeable went above and beyond.

2 personable friendly tour guides took us on a scenic route in a VW bus stopping to visit working windmills (4 euro), clog making demonstration, cheese to taste/buy, fishing village and herring to taste if desired. Return trip by way of the wetlands with views of the dikes famous for keeping the sea water out. Both guides enthusiasticly shared historical points along the route. Surprise stop to share a glass of Bols a traditional Dutch beverage. Our 5 hr tour was actually 5.5 hours, an additional bonus on a delightful sunny day. The pick up location at Cafe De Pont is easily accessed by the free Ferry from the back of Central Train Station every couple of minutes. Well worth the money for our family of four and would definitely go again.
