We had a lovely morning out seeing some sights of Malta and learning about some Maltese traditions and history. We weren’t able to get a boat for the Blue Grotto due to the wind, but that can’t be helped and otherwise we enjoyed it. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy fresh fish as the market was surrounded by restaurants selling many fish dishes!

Full description

Your 5-hour tour starts at the Blue Grotto. Made up of sea caverns on the southern coast of Malta, the Blue Grotto caverns are west of Wied iz-Zurrieq Harbor and across the small uninhabited islet of Filfla. Every day from sunrise until about 13:00 the cave's unique location allows sunlight to reflect in the water to create numerous shades of brilliant blue. Several caverns mirror the brilliant phosphorescent colors of the underwater plants. Other caverns show a deep dark shade of blue. If weather permits, you can do a 20 minute boat trip around the caves for an extra fee. You will then drive to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. Vibrant, colorful Marsaxlokk Market offers a great opportunity to experience the local life. Browse the stalls where fresh fish and seafood are sold, and barter for honey, fruit jams, wine, vegetables, clothing, and souvenirs. You'll have free time to explore this picturesque market village before heading back.

I didn’t have high hopes for this trip as the reviews were pretty mixed but it was actually really good, despite a bit of rain at the Blue Grotto. The itinerary was different to what I expected - we did the market first and the Blue Grotto after, which worked out well and there was no queue for boat tickets at the grotto (mid-May). I thought it was good value considering we were picked up from our hotel in the north of the island at 8.40am and returned just after 2. I have no negatives to say about the trip, we had ample time at both destinations and there were public toilets at both places as well as cafes for refreshment. Highly recommended trip
