1. Experience Sydney’s with a bang
As the clock strikes midnight, Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge lights up with an extended fireworks display, as well as a water-level show with the help of floating platforms. Either get to the nearby park early to reserve your spot or enjoy a cruise on the water for the best view.
2. Enjoy three days in Edinburgh
Take a look back at 2019 from a new perspective at Edinburgh’s Camera Obscura and World Illusions. Over 1,000 interactive exhibitions make for the perfect, family-friendly and fun-filled day to finish the year off. Plus, you’ll get to celebrate Hogmanay, the city’s three-day festival full of torchlit processions, concerts, family activities, dancing, and — of course — fireworks.
3. Make memories at a moon party
Take advantage of a second chance to celebrate New Year’s by ringing in the Lunar New Year at Moon Party in Koh Phangan, Thailand on January 25. These events do get rowdy, so along with your best fluoro zinc makeup, don’t forget a watertight case for your phone and camera!
4. Dance with some Danes
Copenhagen might be cold this time of year, but some local beverages will have you warm enough to head out onto the streets to enjoy the fireworks. If you have access to a boat, even better — watch the city light up from the water and enjoy the fresh air and fresh start to 2020.
5. Blame it on the sangria in Barcelona
Barcelona is a lively city any day of the week and New Year’s Eve, or Nochevieja, is no different. Find a fiesta to join and countdown to medianoche with a bunch of your new local buds. Oh, and make sure to wear red underwear and eat twelve grapes at midnight. It may sound weird, but it’s tradition, OK? The next day, start your year on the right adventurous note by climbing the 504 steps of the Sagrada Familia.
6. Ring in the new bier in Berlin
Discover the difference between day and night on Friedrichstrasse with a morning visit to the Reichstag Dome and an evening visit to the popular New Year’s meeting spot of Brandenburg Gate. With fireworks popular with the public, this is one of the louder places to ring in the new year but it is definitely also memorable.
7. Avoid the crowds in Amsterdam
Before you ring in the new year, head to the Heineken Brewery to get the party started right. After you’ve had your fill of the local brew, have a seat alongside the canal. It’s the best place to watch the diverse range of people who converge on the Dutch capital for New Year’s Eve. There are a number of out of the way spots and you can even relax in one of the city’s parks for a more laid-back kind of New Year’s.
8. Watch the ball drop in NYC
On the other end of the temperature spectrum, brave the chilly winter night to head out on the water to enjoy champagne and New York’s fireworks against the Manhattan skyline. Or, head to Times Square and watch the ball drop with thousands of onlookers.
9. Get lit in Lisbon
Don’t worry about overindulging in Lisbon, there’s a breakfast of Portuguese pastries waiting to cushion your landing the next morning! Mosey on down to the waterfront and enjoy the party atmosphere of the Bairro Alto district.
10. Hang out in Hong Kong
With a world-renowned firework show, Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour is the place to be on New Year’s Eve. Join a cruise on the water to enjoy the light show high above Hong Kong’s incredible city center. If you have little ones in tow (or you just really love Disneyland), this New Year’s Eve Countdown Party is where it’s at.
11. Party like a pro in Rio de Janeiro
As the home of Carnival, you’d better believe Rio de Janeiro knows how to celebrate special occasions. Hit the streets for some samba or make your way to Copacabana, where you can enjoy the countdown with 2 million other revelers.
12. Capture the magic in Cape Town
Welcome 2020 in the warm weather of South Africa’s Cape Town. While there are a number of street parties, you might also prefer dropping in at the New Year’s concert at Kirstenbosch or even spending the day in the nearby Cape Wineland’s vineyards. Either way, it’s sure to be a memorable night!
13. Celebrate with the mouse
You know the one! Ringing in the new year at Disneyland Paris’ New Year’s Eve party is nothing short of spectacular. Easily the most family-friendly option, guests young and young at heart will enjoy a special parade and fireworks.
