Highlights
  • Explore the Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Discover the flora and fauna endemic to Madeira Island
  • See the Levada do Rei, one of the most beautiful aqueducts on this island
Full description
As you make your way along the paths that follow the aqueduct or levada you’ll realize that the Portuguese must have admired the scenic beauty in 1419 when they first explored the unique vegetation of Madeira Island. On your half-day walking tour of Levada do Rei, you’ll be experiencing one of Madeira’s most spectacular levadas. You’ll spend the first half of the walk in an exotic forest that is composed mainly of specimens of introduced flora. After about 30 minutes, you’ll enter one of the most well-preserved areas of the Laurisilva Forest. The forest was listed by UNESCO in 1999 as a World Heritage Site and is considered among the 7 wonders of Portugal. You’ll observe here, in abundance, the large number of endemic flora species of the island. The distance covered on this guided walk is approximately 10 kilometers.

Great day out. Jenny and the driver turned up bang on time at the meeting point. Our hotel was a narrow street so a nearby meeting point was arranged beforehand. After collecting all the other passengers we had about 1 hour drive to the start of the walk. Once there there is a nice small bar to grab a coffee, beer, whatever's your poison.. My wife an I have walked levada's as part of a longer excursion, but this walk is only walking and felt more like a proper Levada walk. Walking through the forest was a pleasure with beautiful views everywhere. Jenny is a wonderful knowledgeable guide who is obviously passionate about the Madeira environment. The walking is about 4 hours in total, 2 out and two back. Once back at the starting point you have a chance for a drink. I took Jenny's advice and went for the Poncha. I'm a bit sad I didn't do this excursion before otherwise I'd be checking for another tour with Madeira-Adventure-Kingdom again. There is always next time back in Madeira

Bus arrived right on time. Haf a couple more pick ups & by the time we got walking it was 10am. Walk was beautiful and the guide, Samuel, gave us insight the whole way. Only downside was we didn't get enough chances to stop for photos and water, we stopped for a matter of seconds and then paraded forward. Although out the tours control another couple were there who we kept having to wait for. At one point we waited a good 10 minutes for them to catch up because 'we found some people to talk to'. Other than that a good day & I would recommend!
