Full description
Depart Funchal and journey to the start of your walk, where you will follow the routes of the "levada" irrigation system developed in the 16th century by Madeira's first settlers. Descend from the plateau of Paul da Serra to the Rabaçal guesthouse and walk to the waterfall of the Levada do Risco. Continue towards the Levada das 25 Fontes, dominated by moorland at its highest point. Walk until you reach a small lagoon at the bottom of an enormous cliff, and marvel at the sight of 25 natural springs cascading into the lake. Return along a different path, passing through a tunnel that carries water to the south of the island. Admire a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna along the way.

Nunu (driver) and Sara (guide) were excellent. We got a Whatsapp message the day before to confirm pick up location and hour, very helpful and welcome. Sara was passionate, knowledgeable and personable. Took time to explain bits of history about the island, flora and its natural reservations. We were a mix of English and German speaking people where the she comfortably switched between. Amazing walking tour paired with a an excellent guide. One the best highlights of our trip.

I definitely recommend this activity if you enjoy walks. It has breathtaking views along the way and our guide Charlotte was really nice. I would say that level of difficulty is easy to moderate, it has some stairs up and down and some very narrow places but the waterfalls are stunning. I just wish that there was not so many people doing the walk at the same time so we could take more time to appreciate it.

A wonderful walk in some stunning nature. Guide was a local expert and very happy to be in her obvious element. Thoroughly enjoyable day, walk was around 4 easy/ intermediate ability hours/7 miles tracked on my sports tracker app of mostly descent but some big steps and narrow levadas if your easily challenged. Poncha stop afterwards was very well deserved.
