Full description
Depart Funchal and journey to the start of your walk, where you will follow the routes of the "levada" irrigation system developed in the 16th century by Madeira's first settlers. Descend from the plateau of Paul da Serra to the Rabaçal guesthouse and walk to the waterfall of the Levada do Risco. Continue towards the Levada das 25 Fontes, dominated by moorland at its highest point. Walk until you reach a small lagoon at the bottom of an enormous cliff, and marvel at the sight of 25 natural springs cascading into the lake. Return along a different path, passing through a tunnel that carries water to the south of the island. Admire a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna along the way.

Great way to see the levada. Our guide was very friendly and kept everyone together without feeling overbearing. The levada walk was beautiful and pick up and drop off went smoothly. The only part we didn’t like was the cafe we stopped at the end - it wasn’t very pleasant and we felt like we had to buy something since we were there for a while. Overall beautiful day and would recommend.

Beautiful hike but way too many people - hundreds of tourists on the same trail. We made a 20min stop before and after the hike. Would have liked more time - more than 25min - to take pictures and have picknick lunch. Had the feeling we were in a rush all the time.
