Full description
Visit the volcanic island of Pico and enjoy its delicious internationally renowned wines. You will visit many little traditional villages surrounded by volcanic stone vineyards (Currais de Vinha), old wineries (Adegas), and old distilleries (Alambiques). Pico consists of a remarkable pattern of long linear walls running inland from, and parallel to, the rocky shore. These walls were built to protect the thousands of small rectangular plots from wind and seawater. The extraordinary assembly of the fields, in houses and early 19th-century manor houses, in wine-cellars and churches speaks to the viniculture of the area. Grapes are traditionally grown between the rocks of lava stones, without soil. This part of Pico was unsuitable for ordinary farming. You will have the opportunity to speak with the local producers as you walk through the beautiful Currais de Vinha of Criação Velha. Towards the end of your tour, you can enjoy local products and taste some Azorean Triangle cheeses.
