From Wrocław: Stalag Luft 3 Great Escape Tour

Stalag Luft 3, known to many as “The Great Escape” Camp was the vast POW Camp for Allied Airmen cut out of a thick forest in Upper Silesia, then in the East of Germany now in Poland and located 100 miles northwest of Wrocław. The site was selected because it would be difficult to escape by tunneling given the sandy sub soil – however, the camp is best known for two famous prisoner escapes that took place there by tunneling: The Great Escape and The Wooden Horse Escape. Museum Guide will explore with you museum and also the area where the prison camp was including the ‘Harry’ tunnel and the memorial to the 50. Here you can see exactly how long the tunnel was and the exit and entry points. A guard tower has been reconstructed to show the proximity of the tunnel exit to the attentive German soldiers on patrol. You'll be also able to wander through the woods and see some of the original foundations of the camp.

This is a small but very interesting museum, on the site of a WWII prisoner of war camp part of which was where the actual events of The Great Escape took place. Our museum guide was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic to share his this knowledge with us. We visited a few weeks before the 80th Anniversary of the escape when thousands of visitors are expected including relatives of those brave men who took part. The site of the tunnel is about 1km away in the woods. Our driver Jacob took us to this, he was also very knowledgeable and provided us with interesting facts. It was a trip well worth making if you are interested this part of our history.

The trip to the site from Wroclaw was 1 hr 45m, but on arrival we had to do a self-tour as the Guide was occupied by an American family whose relative was a POW and apparently they get priority...? Lukasz our driver refunded 400zl without being asked, which was fine, as you don't really need a guide to tell you what you can see on the info boards/displays. The museum itself is a bit underwhelming (not really a criticism), but the memorials for the murdered aircrew and 'Tom' 'Dick' and 'Harry' tunnels in the lonely pine woods were moving and thought-provoking.

The tour of the museum was excellent, with a very knowledgeable guide, Merca, and lots of interesting items and information. Also, the visit to the actual site of Harry was absolutely fascinating and our driver, Jacob, was professional, helpful and informative for the entire tour. We highly recommend this tour as a great experience, not to be missed.

A fantastic trip - really interesting and informative. The museum itself may be small but it contains a wealth of information and artefacts. Then driving to the site of Harry makes you appreciate the massive scale of the camp. Jacob was a brilliant guide - friendly, chatty, helpful and full of knowledge.

Excellent. Evocative atmosphere - no guides on site because of Anniversary celebrations but driver Pavel did a good job.
