Full description

This mountain bike trip combines great cycling with the chance to discover authentic Lao rural life. Leave the beaten path and find your own adventure outside of town. Get geared up and ride out of town along the Mekong River. We cross the old communist bridge, and make a stop to visit Xieng Lek Village, famous for its mulberry paper and weaving. We then have to get out of town for approx 15 minutes on a main road. We follow the Nam Xuang River past villages before offroading into the countryside, up and down hills, past rice paddies and local villages. Ride through vast rice paddies and Lao Leum, Hmong, and Khmu villages with locals tending to the daily activities of Lao agrarian life. The last leg of the ride will take you along the Nam Khan River. Before entering Luang Prabang City we visit the very unique and beautiful octagonal temple full of wall paintings, Wat Phon Phao, with its huge golden stupa and an incredible view overlooking all of Luang Prabang.

My wife and I consider ourselves to be in top physical shape ( we’ve biked Utah and BC) and this ride pushed us to the limits. While our guide was great and maybe it was just his level fitness was superb, I promise 99% of you won’t be able to complete the trip if it’s the same one we did. Our trip was ~ 50km’s and they offered to do 80. We said that was a bit much. The ride itself was super hilly and was on both paved roads with trucks and then what seemed like dirt service roads with cars. Lunch was at the river, which was pretty, but laden with trash. If GYG continues this ride, I’d suggest asking people how far and what kind of terrain they are most comfortable with and looking at electric bikes. I’m fine with hills, but by the time we got to lunch, we were done, especially with the heat. Great trip, you just need to be in super shape to enjoy it.
