Enjoy a 5-day tour of Vientiane and Luang Prabang in the hills of Laos. See golden temples and beautiful mosaic walls, explore local markets and get panoramic sunset views from hilltribe villages. Meet villagers, sail the Mekong River and more.
What to Expect
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Luan Prabang nestles in the mountains at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan Rivers. This former royal capital is one of the most delightful towns in Asia and the focus of this 5-day tour, which also includes an orientation tour of Vientiane.
Small enough to explore on foot, the town reveals its charm and history at every turn, with gilded temples on every corner and saffron-robed monks strolling quiet streets. The local markets, where Hmong tribeswomen come to shop, offer fascinating produce, as well as silver and textiles.
Day 1: Arrival Vientiane
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. This afternoon you can enjoy an orientation tour of the Laos capital, including the Victory Monument, Wat That Luang, Central Market, Wat Sisaket and Wat Prakeo National Museum.
Day 2: Vientiane - Luang Prabang
Take a tour of the local markets in the morning before your journey to Luang Prabang. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel to settle in.
Then, take a tour of the charming town, starting with the brilliant mosaics of Wat Xieng Thong, arguably the most stunning temple in Laos. Continue to the Palace Museum to see an eclectic collection of statues, mosaic-covered walls, French mirrors, and a piece of moon rock given to the people of Laos by President Nixon.
In the late afternoon, head to the top of Mt. Phousi for panoramic views of the city and surrounding hills. The mountain is dotted with small shrines and monasteries, and a perfect spot to watch the sun set over the golden spires of the wats.
Day 3: Luang Prabang
Rise early to see the monks on their morning meal procession. Return to your hotel for breakfast.
Then, sail up the Mekong River to the holy caves of Pak Ou, where some of the most famous Buddhist sculptures in southeast Asia are found. Re-board your boat and travel downstream to a rice-wine producing village on the banks of the Mekong. Afterwards, visit Ban Phanom, a tribal village well known for its traditional cotton and silk weaving. Time is allotted for you to purchase some of these beautiful, inexpensive hand-woven cloths. Return to your hotel for the evening.
Day 4: Luang Prabang
This morning you will embark on a road excursion to Khouangsi Falls and the Akha hilltribe village beneath the cascades. A picnic lunch will be provided at the Falls. Later in the afternoon, return to Luang Prabang and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
