Explore two of the most sensational locations in the Pyrenees with a trip to the Pic du Midi and Gavarnie. Ride the cable car, enjoy spectacular views from Europe’s highest museum and visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gavarnie.
What to Expect
No visit to the Pyrenees region would be complete without a trip to the spectacular sites of Pic du Midi de Bigorre and the Cirque of Gavarnie.
Set in the heart of the Pyrenees mountains, the majestic Pic du Midi towers 9,437 feet (2,877 meters) above sea level at its highest point. The climb takes 15 minutes thanks to a cable car and once you’ve reached the celestial viewing terraces you can gaze southwards over the magnificent peaks of the Pyrenees range and northwards across the low-lying plains.
The summit is famous for its exceptional beauty, but it also boats a splendid observatory, renowned for its scientific significance and for the fascinating museum, where you can learn why the Pic is so precious in the heart and mind of the locals.
Continue your tour at Gavarnie, one of the most imposing destinations in the Midi-Pyrénées region. Situated at the very center of the Pyrenees National Park, you will go to the village of Gavarnie and visit the Cirque. All around is an alpine scenery so magnificent Victor Hugo called it a “mountain and a mural at the same time.”
Having seen so much stunning scenery, it is time to go back to Lourdes at the mountain foothills for your hotel drop-off.
