London: Another Brick in the Wall Self-Guided Audio Tour

2. London: Another Brick in the Wall Self-Guided Audio Tour

Trace London’s ancient city wall as it grew from an enclosure around the Roman settlement of Londinium, to the large medieval structure that ringed the bustling city. On this walking tour, you’ll see parts of London Wall that still stand today. I’ll tell you about its origins, construction and, in some parts, its demise. I’ll show you the site of each of the seven gates that gave access to the city. You’ll also hear about some of the people that once lived in the shadow of the wall, and gain an insight into what life was like for these locals. Along with tracing the route of the wall from Emperor Trajan’s statue to the Blackfriar, a popular pub, I’ll show you some of the city’s other sites, including several historical churches. I’ll point out St Olave’s Church, Guild Church of St Katharine Cree, St Ann & St Agnes Church, and the site of the medieval chapel of St Mary & St Nicholas. You’ll hear about Aldgate Pump and its fatal connection to polluted water in 1860, the teenage skeleton found under ‘the Gherkin’, and the place where Jack the Ripper murdered a woman. On this tour, you’ll have the opportunity to: • Find out why a seventeenth century diarist decided to bury a hunk of cheese in a hole in the ground • See the church where victims of the Great Plague are buried • Hear about the church that inspired Charles Dickens’ “St Ghastly Grim" in The Uncommercial Traveller • Listen to tales of robbery, violence and deception • Take in the oldest Synagogue in the UK • Walk through an area synonymous with law, order and incarceration Whether it’s your first time in London or you’re a curious local, you’ll gain a valuable introduction to the wall’s rich history. Give yourself two hours for this walk or go at your own pace to further explore the historical churches and pubs mentioned en route. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and food outlets if you need a short or lengthy break at any point. I’ve also highlighted the halfway point, in case you want to draw out the tour over a day or two.

Roman London Walking Tour

4. Roman London Walking Tour

Much of Roman London is now 23 feet or 7 metres underground but if you know where to look then you can still see Roman structures today and what makes it especially incredible is that they just about survived 2000 years of construction, great fires, bombs and wars. This walking tour takes you away from the mainstream tourist sights of the West End into the original Londinium or the City of London as it is today. You will visit the sites of the old Roman Baths in London and see some of the most impressive sections of the old Roman city wall which used to span the entire city along with the ruins of an old Roman fort. The tour also takes you underground into a crypt with the flooring of a Roman house and a ‘re-laid’ Roman pavement or sidewalk. Where possible you will visit the famed Temple of Mithras, the Persian god of heavenly light which was discovered in the 20th century before being moved to a new location.  It has now been painstakingly put back in place and restored but underneath a 21st century office tower. You will visit the site of the largest Roman building north of the Alps, the famous London Stone and the remains of the London amphitheater where 7000 people used to watch the events unfold in the arena. They might not be the most complete Roman buildings in the world but they provide a fascinating insight on the very earliest history of modern London and get to see places that even most locals never get to explore.

What people are saying about London Wall

Overall rating

4.5 / 5

based on 10 reviews

You get a very good personal 3-hour-"stroll" through London. The tourguide is fluent in the choosen language (german in my case) and really explains very good - about history, special events, Harry Potter etc. You get explanations to typical sights and also to lesser or unknown points of interest in London; and the tourguide is also flexible in respect of what you want to visit. The Shard is offers a fascinating view and complements the tour very good (visits to other sights are not included). So everything is excellent - if there wouldn't be the exorbitant price! I know, how much a tour-guide is earning approximately per hour, and it is easy to find out, how much you pay for a fast-lane-entrance to "The Shard" - so I think, there are a few institutions too much which have to get paid by the exorbitant tour-price. Only for this reason my rating is only four stars and not five...

When I took the private guided tour I learned so much about London city from its history, to the architecture that surrounded me. It was nice to have a VIP experience with a guide that has trained, and had a huge knowledge about the city. Also, it was great that the tickets to the Asgard were included and bought in advance. This allowed me to skip the line and head straight up for sunset. I did the 3 pm tour and it worked like a charm to be on time for sunset

The private Tour was incredible, our guide Anna really knows the history of England, so we really felt like going back in time. She did go the extra mile and showed us places that go beyond a guided tour. The only downside was we got distracted with time, and only arrived at The Shard at 6:30pm and it was closing at 7pm. Also be aware that your guide has your tickets to The Shard. Overall it was a lovely experience!

The experience was very pleasant. The guide was on time and very kind to help us find the meeting point. The tour was rich in information and the guide was very friendly. Interacting all the time with questions and fun facts. It was a great opportunity to get to know London and all the hidden jams. The tour was 3 hours walk but it was a very easy walk. Would highly recommend.

Our guide Jonoko was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. We had a lovely time!
