Full description
The Royal Mews is an important branch of the Lord Chamberlain's Office and provides road transport for The Queen and members of the Royal Family by both horse-drawn carriage and motor car. It is also one of the finest working stables still in existence, responsible for the training of the Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, the horses that pull the royal carriages. Among the historic coaches and carriages on display is the spectacular new Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which conveyed Her Majesty The Queen on the State Opening of Parliament on 4 June 2014. What's more, cast your eye over the luxurious Australian State Coach, with central heating and electric windows, which carried The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace after the Royal Wedding in 2011. The most dazzling of all is the Gold State Coach, which has been used at every coronation since that of George IV in 1821.  Among the vehicles on display, you can also find the Irish State Coach, purchased by Queen Victoria in 1852. Queen Victoria, King George VI and Her Majesty The Queen have all travelled to the State Opening of Parliament in this carriage.  During your visit to the Royal Mews, relish the opportunity to see some of The Queen’s horses that draw the coaches and carriages housed in the Mews. Visitors to the Royal Mews can also see some of the fine livery worn by The Queen’s coachmen. Apart from a few small details, it remains much the same as it was in Victorian times.  Remarkably, some of the tailors used for production of liveries today are the same companies employed during the reign of George III in the 18th century.

What a gem, even for a Londoner

Really enjoyed taking my mum around the mews. Ticket office gent was lovely & helpful, the coaches were amazing, wish there had been a few more horses! The headset guides were short & sweet and for any age. A perfect precursor for the state rooms in the afternoon & at a great price as far as London attractions go. Would absolutely recommend.

Great and interesting, would recommend.

Amazing carriages and horses. Insight into the working stables and the history. You have an audio guide which is good but would recommend the guided tour, it’s free and you can still go around with the audio after if you want to. The guided tour covers the horses, carriages and cars, but not all of them, still would recommend to do it, the family enjoyed it. Trouble finding the mews entrance in the crowd with busy queues. Its round the back of the palace, you are looking for a red sign on the wall, you have to take a paper copy of the vouchers and get them changed for tickets. There was no queue for the mews when we arrived at 9.45am.

I was annoyed that I had pre purchased my ticket and had a print out as well on my phone but still had to line up to get a ticket to enter. A large line up and this gave me less time there. Because of this I didn't have enough time to listen and follow recording as I lost half an hour lining up. I lost time as well having to walk all the way around to there from where we exit from buckingham palace. Would have loved more time there.
